All MKII seats are not the same
« on: March 11, 2010, 01:34:51 am »
I got a set of spiffy MK3 seats today and went to swap the bases off some '86 Jetta seats, only to find they wouldn't swap.. THe base itself is a tad wider, and the pins that the back connects too and rests on are closer together..  Pretty much the bases were exactly like my MK1 seats with the adjustment lever on the opposite side..  Did they not change these till later years or something??  I know they were the original seats in the Jetta..

I guess it's back to the boneyard or cut weld and bend to fit...

AS far as fitting into the car they are the same..   However it's where the seat back attaches they are different.. There's a link over on the Vortex that shows how to swap MK3 seats into a MK2 by switching the metal seat base..

Since mk2 seats fit a MK1 I was doing this to put MK3 seats in the Rabbit.. (Confused yet?? I am  ;D)  SO I took my mk3 seats apart and some mk2 seats from the '86 Jetta apart too..  Turned out the seat backs attached differently.. The seat backs attached the same as the Mk1 seats, but not the same as the MK3 seats..

I wonder if some of the earlier MK2's got some leftover MK1 parts..

my early mk2 cars have totally different style seats in them than my late mk2s. i just wasnt sure what you were talking about, but yes, they attach differently. the seats that came in my 85 gti looked more like rabbit seats than mk2 stuff.
