Where might I find info on the old Audi 2.0L gas engine?

Before you flag me, Please read on OK I have a 1979 Jeep DJ5 (Ex-postal jeep) that has the old Audi crossflow 2.0L engine with a Chrysler 904 3spd Automatic. It runs fine but I really want to pull it out are replace it with an 81 1.6L VW Diesel and believe the bellhousing is the same as the 2.0L but I have not been able to find out any information on the old 2.0. Lots of info on the new 2.0 though. I need to find out if the old 2.0 has 6 flywheel bolts or not. I think it does? If it does, I think all I need to do is pull the 2.0 and swap the flywheel/flex plate to the 81 VW diesel. The 1.6 came out of a rusted out Dasher that had a 4spd. So the Oil pan and exhaust should not be a problem. I can and will make my own motor mounts. So any ideas where I might find information on the old 2.0L or if anyone knows if it has 6 flywheel bolts or not?

Old 2,0 4cyl has same bellhousing pattern than 5cylinder engines. FW bolt pattern seems to be 6 bolts, but M12 instead of M10 used in later 4cyl. No idea how close itīs to later 4cyl.

5 cylinder and 4 cylinder bell housing patterns are NOT EVEN CLOSEto the same. and 5 cylinders have 8 evenly spaced bolts holding the flywheel on. if the 2.0 has the same bell as the 5 cyl, then its not gonna work. someone tried to buy my audi 2.0 diesel off me for their mail jeep recently actually. for all i know it could have been the OP.

yea, i bet the ones that came with audi engines are kinda hard to find.
i wouldnt mind having one either. i want a 4x4 small diesel bad...

Thanks for the effort so far. I know the the only year these 2.0L's came in the Jeep's were 1979 and not all of them. They did however drop the 2.0L in 76-77 Gremlins and like Concords but only put them in the Jeeps for one year and only for the Postal Service. I know they were not built exactly like the Porsche or the Audi version as this 2.0 has a Carb and breaker point ignition. It runs fantasic but I truely want a VW diesel in my Jeep. I guess the only true way to find out is to remove the engine and compare it to a 1.6L to see if it will swap. I hate to do that but if it doesn't have the same pattern, I have a 6cyl N/A VW Diesel from out of a Volvo that might bolt up..

Don't bother.  It won't fit.  As posted above, it is either an AUDI bolt pattern or AMC, not VW.  To the earlier comment about Fox:  no, the Fox was a VW pattern engine (actually, the VW inline originally WAS an Audi engine - for the 1973 Fox - but was a different and new entirely new bolt pattern which went into the VW Scirocco in '73 when VW bought Audi).  The engine you need is the early 2.0 5 cyl TD from Audi 5000, 82-86.  It should bolt up to the bell.  Of course, you COULD use the 2.5 TDIs in 5 cyl or V6 configuration - but you would have to bring in from Europe.  The new 3.0 V6 common rail would also bolt in, but now you are toaking RIDICULOUS value.

NOW:  this thread opens up a possibility I have never considered:  since the Audi engine was bolted into Jeeps and Gremlins (it was), it is first needed to know if they DID use the Audi bolt pattern, or if the blocks were re-cast to use AMC.  If the former, there is a supply of Audi to US transmission bell housings out there from manual trans 4 cyl Gremlins.  Let us know what bolt patttern when you get it out.

I can take a picture or two of the engine bay but I don't know how to post them on here? Maybe someone could identify the pattern from various pictures? I'll go take some pictures now and if someone knows how to post them here, maybe they could explain how and then we could all see for ourselves? Thanks

looks like the same bell pattern as my 2.0 5 banger TD. god i wanna find an old audi jeep now. it would be soo cool to have one with a turbo 5 cyl.

So this is not the same as a 1.6L TD then? Maybe a 6cyl VW Diesel from a Volvo would bolt up?

a 6cyl might be too long for the jeep. a 5 cyl would be perfect. how hard are jeeps like yours to find?

OK Here is the 2.0L Gas and then a 1.6L Diesel. Looks like the top bolts are the same to me?? The last picture is a D24 (2.4L) from a Volvo. Don't think this looks like the same as the 2.0L Gas to me. And I compared the D24 to a D20T and it appears to be the same bolt pattern for the top bellhousing bolts.
