A1- How to identify what flywheel &/or clutch you have......
« on: March 05, 2010, 12:30:01 am »
...the catch is; can it be done with the car together? Can it be done with no down time?
I was thinking you could ID the flywheel through the bell housing hole, but not sure what to look for. Has anyone done this. I'm putting in a new engine and want to do the clutch at the same time.

This is for a '79 Rabbit with 1.6 diesel, 4 speed manual.

79 Rabbit 1.5 Diesel 2 door- with a/c, oooooo.

Look around here, but I am pretty sure you can put a 190mm  200mm or 210mm clutch and pressure plate on all VW trans for your car, BUT you have to meet a couple conditions.
You can't put a bigger clutch disc on than what your pressure plate is.
You can't put a pressure plate bigger than what your flywheel is.
You have to have the small 24 spline hub in the clutch.

Look and search, but I am pretty sure you could use a big and beefy 210mm setup on your car if all the parts are matched. I think the kit for an 8v scirocco works, but the flywheel has to be marked for TDC for a diesel not gas.

Thanks! I just wish I could ID what flywheel I have without pulling the trans so I can get all the parts before hand. Trying to minimize down time.

you can just buy all new and that way you can upgrade to the biggest clutch and have it all ready to go. Guys are selling flywheels on here regularly then just buy the clutch kit to go with it.
