What other VW cars share the Golf/Rabbit 1.6 GTD gearbox/trans (code 4T)?

Hi everyone.... my car started leaking gearbox oil this weekend, the garage says it's because the diff has worn inside my gearbox and the vibrations are screwing the drive shaft seal. I need to get another cheap used gearbox from somewhere and obviously it would help if I knew what other VWs take a 4T gearbox. Any assistance is gratefully appreciated.....

What year and stuff is your car?

This http://www.scirocco.org/gears/ doesn't have 4T but any (as long as the input shaft is the same size) of these will bolt up so you just need to figure out your ratios and get another one like it.

Or you can get one with different ratios for better cruise.

4T is a common gearbox on the 1600 & 1800 carburettored Mk2 golfs, I had to use one after my GTD's crownwheel suicide rivets commited suicide and said "goodbye cruel world" through six new holes in the gearbox. It was a straight swap. Look in the boot of a donor car for the white build sticker, it will list what gearbox is fitted, and save you grovelling in all the clatty stuff trying to read gearbox numbers. You can get muddy confirming that the gearbox matches the boot sticker once you have a likely candidate.  
It's then a plug and play swap.

Hi, thanks for the replies! It's surprising how little information there is regarding the 4T gearbox for North America, must be a European thing. I'm off to some breaker's yards today to get dirty.....

One yard I called had 24 gearboxes, all 4T sitting around on a shelf for years so they put them on eBay at the end of last year and they sold out in less than 2 weeks apparently. Other than that, not a sniff of one so looks as though I'll have to do some matching and finger crossing etc. I printed out those sheets with gearbox codes on them, thanks for that.

Just a final word, have worked out a which other codes are compatible- hopefully might be useful for anyone else looking for a gearbox. 6G, 8A, 4Y and ACN code gearboxes have the same final drive, same 90mm flange size and virtually identical ratios. Codes ACL, ASF, ATH and AON will fit if you change the CV flanges to 90mm. I don't know for sure about the ATH box, some sources say it has a 24mm input shaft size, some say it has 22mm.

Final word on this for anyone who owns a Mk2 Golf GTD it might be of some use. I bought an ATH gearbox, and it dropped straight in- the input shaft size is 22mm so I could use the stock clutch. I had to swap over the drive flanges and use the 90mm ones from my old 4T gearbox but they went straight on with no problems, changed the seals as a precaution. The gearing, indicated speed and road speed are all the same so it's pretty much a perfect replacement. It was used in very late Mk2 1.8 petrol cars and Mk3 1.9 diesels as far as I know.
