So a couple friends and I got together to dyno. Chris ran his PD TDI (167/267), Guy ran his VRT (211/244), and I ran my IDI.
1984 Jetta Deluxe Diesel. I picked it up back in July in pretty sad shape (needed major cleaning, suspension, tires, brakes, wheels, pump reseal, wiring fixes, other randomness), and have been daily driving it since August. I haven't done anything to the engine other than maintenance (I resealed the pump and set timing to 1.03, changed oil/coolant, fixed wiring, etc...). Figured it would run in the mid-30's hp and mid 50's tq.
I.
Was.
Wrong!
We got three runs each. My runs got progressively better since each one I turned the fuel screw in by 1/8th turn. Started with almost no smoke, wound up 1/4 turn in and smoking nicely
Looked up a few dyno sheets from others. Is it possible I bought a car with a modded pump? Either way, I'm super giddy!
stock intake and exhaust? or modified?
What other specs on your ride?
No engine related mods. Only mods are suspension, cosmetic, and electrical (audio, wiring, lighting). Stock intake and paper filter, stock super rusty exhaust with no leaks. Estimate over 200k miles on it. I got it with 185k and the odo had been nonworking for quite sond time prior. I fixed it, reset it to 0 and have added over 8k since August.
I really just cleaned it, dropped it, did maintenance, and drive the crap out of it.
I guess I'm running a fairly light wheel tire combo (24.5lb total). :/
Seems realistic really -
your first run made 42hp, whch is about 20% less than the vw specified flywheel value. you got 6hp by giving it more fuel to the smoke limit - sounds reasonable.
theres no real reason for older VW IDI's (especially n/a) to lose much power over time - they dont have any EGR to clog up runners and ports, and i would be surprised if normal engine wear would cause much in the way of power loss really.
Seems just like you have a healthy engine :-)
Ok. I'm happy with that
I had tried to look up some other IDI dyno runs and realized it's not a popular thing for people to do (or at least post on the ole' interwebz). I did find one thread on here that had the stock vs Giles pump numbers, stock being in the mid 30's/50's and the modded pump being right where mine is, which is why I asked about the possibility of mine having a modded pump. Either way the car drives great. If I give it enough room I can pass without shifting out of 5th. And I can consistently get 50mpg if I pay attention to my driving and remember I'm in the drtydzl and not the VR6.
Very nice numbers. Nice curves too.
There's a good chance you are refering to my dyno run. That engine had around 350 psi in each cylinder I think. Do you know your compression numbers?
Please post your dyno with specs in the dyno thead as well
Probably, I recognize you're screenname. Hopefully we'll be doing a compression test in the near future.
Could you post a link to the dyno thread?
Just curious, are your valve clearances set to spec....or not known?
I want to say in spec, but now you've got me wondering if I really checked all of them. Recheck this weekend I suppose...
Grrrrr!
all you guys with access to dynos!
