Questions about identifying an engine
« on: February 23, 2010, 01:13:44 pm »
The po removed the A/C god knows how long ago.. and just kinda cut the pipe going in to the cabin. Not a big deal really, and not the problem I am inquiring about

I was told this was the original engine (no rebuild) with well over 500k miles on it. I am having troubles believing this the more I think of it.. Is there anyway that I can identify this block and head for sure? So I can be %100 they came with the car in 1981?

The engine starts and runs WAY T GOOD to have over 500k miles without a rebuild I think.. I haven't done a compression test yet to properly survey the health of the engine, but I think it runs way to good to be that old.

How can I check the blocks validity?

thanks a lot guys

what is the engine code, and what year is the car.

if they don't match then a swap was done.

as for a rebuild, that will be harder to tell without taking it apart and looking at the wear parts.

its ok if it has had a rebuild.. but I am beginning to think it is non original engine.. unless he had everything needed to really easily take out the A/c

what is the engine code supposed to be on an 81 jetta? non turbo

there is a flat machined surface on the block to the right of the IP just below the head gasket, it will be stamped there

the CR was used in golf/jetta 80-82

Most rebuilt blocks have some trace of green paint on it. Also, often the machine shop will put a metal placard on the block stating where the rebuild was done.
