Need help with 1.6 No-Start
« on: February 22, 2010, 06:02:04 am »
Hey guys, read through what I can of the previous threads, but cannot seem to figure out why I can't get my 1.6 to start...

Backstory - Bought a clean caddy shell to throw a diesel into...and soon after bought a 1.6N/A needing a rebuild. In the meantime, found a caddy with bad rust but already had a ecodiesel swap w/5sp, so figured i'd throw the running motor in for now and have a rebuilt backup...So I pulled motor and trans complete and threw it in my shell (drove the donor car, which ran fine previous to shock towers rusting through).

I put it in, and first time I fired it up i got about 45 seconds or so out of it (ran rough) and then i turned it off since it was just a test. I do a bunch of work on interior and rest of car...but then when i go to start the thing again, i can't get it to catch for more than a second or two. I've been trying to figure out why its not running now, but can't seem to get anything to get it to run...

-Made sure the IP was primed, and tried with an electric feed pump (no change)
-Bled injector lines and seems to be getting plenty of fuel
-new starter and battery
-fresh diesel running out of a jug up front (tried with diesel purge too, no change)

So i figured maybe i lost compression, which i tried to test yesterday...but had an incident trying to pull the injectors. They're pretty well stuck and i managed to crush a few fingers when my breaker bar slipped (impact wrench wasn't doing it). So i figured in order to get something out of my shop time, i'd test the two cylinders i could get at the glow plugs...400psi on 3rd cyl, 480psi on 4th. While I know 80 psi is a pretty decent difference, and just about out of wear limit, those seem plenty high enough to get it running.

I'm going to try and get something figured out for pulling the injectors some day this week, but anyone have any ideas in the meantime?

Have you checked your Glow Plug system? You've got fuel, you've got the starter turning.. only thing you need to add to that to run is heat ;). Check and make sure your gp's are working first before you tear this thing apart.

Internet tells me its about 35F in Easthampton.. crapped out glow plugs and the engine will never fire at that temperature.

my money is on GP's

Thanks, I'll check them again tonight. My thought was that those weren't it, as if i don't glow cycle, i don't even get a pop out of the thing.

The truck is also indoors (though not really heated). But, I did try a 'heat the crap out of the motor and then try starting it' test, with a bunch of electric and propane heaters (got 90F at the valve cover) which didn't seem to make much of a difference...

I 2X the glow plug system. I had trouble with my 6.9 Ford Diesel at startup and stuck a hair dryer in the air intake to warmup the intake. After warming up the intake she would start right up. Do you have fuel coming out of the injection lines at the injector end?

Thought I would update this...compression was good across the board, as well as all the glow plugs. Problem ended up being 2 things, bad shut off valve and my injectors were gummed up. I don't know which one was the main cause but couldn't get it started without doing both.

So new questions: Do the eco-diesels run turbo injectors? It seems to be running fine now (on NA injectors), but i'm pretty sure the ones I pulled were turbo.

I had bought the cheaper solenoid shut off valve from Meyle, which ended up being junk and caused a lot of headache. Don't know if anyone else had the same experience, but it certainly wasn't worth the $20 i saved at the time.

I'm still relatively new to diesels, but I've read that the stop solenoids go bad in the open position, no?

Wondering if I should keep a spare in the car, just in case...  kinda like gas Rabbit guys with a jumper wire or an extra fuel pump relay.

The stop solenoids fail closed. When 12V is applied to them they create a magnetic force that pulls the plunger up and allows fuel to enter the high pressure area of the pump. You could carry a spare, but it's very rare for them to fail. Bosch knew how to make diesel parts, the gas stuff must have been made by Robert's less intelligent brother.

In a pinch you can remove the stop solenoid and take out the plunger and you'll be on the road again. The only catch is you won't be able to turn your car off. You'll have to stall it.

Good to know.... maybe the "dumping clutch to stop" part made me think they failed "open".
