I hurt my VW finger...
« on: February 21, 2010, 04:50:43 pm »
I have been inside for too long. I brought some stuff for the VW home from the farm to work on it and had a tool show to go to this weekend for work. I really didn't feel like working on anything so I got out my bass. First time in at least 6 months I have touched it and went to a jam night at the American Legion up the road with a friend of mine. Played for about an hour and now my fingers are killing me and I am not working on the car stuff :D...so this post is somewhat related to the General VW section ;)
Pic of a bass that looks identical to mine, except I took off the guard on the bridge pickup. Ric 4003.

The mask and the shot(s) are actually an IQ test. If you are wearing or circulating, you just failed the test. I can't feel sorry for you.

I know :-[
I really want to play now. I have been wrenching on it since its too cold and finger now hurts to wrench on the VW. It had way too much under bow and is all out of intonation.

What do you have Andrew? Ibanez makes some nice stuff. Everyone I have ever played had a very fast action. I had it down to a hot rod P Bass, Ibanez, or the Ric when I bought mine years ago. Overall, I don't think the Ric plays as nice as an Ibanez or Fender Jazz neck, but I love the tone. I figured I could always get better, but I could never change the ringing tone. I guess I would have to play more for that to happen though :(.

Gotta keep those calluses in shape, man. I can't go more than about 2 weeks before they start fading. My 12-string is a punisher. :D

That was the style I almost got. I really liked the punch that those pickups had. Sweet looking bass Andrew.
...fingers still hurt.

Yeah the ring of the neck through of a Ric to me is awesome. Plus it usually stays put with the 2 truss rods in it.
I had to dig in a customers bolt bin today to rearrange his bins and label them. Needless to say my fingers still hurt. I am going down to play now to try to get it back in shape.
Who would have thought that there would have been so many Bass players on the forum...must be the low pitch of diesel combustion being so close to the low frequencies of a Bass is why alot of us like both :D

Well then I better sign in as another diesel/bass guy... axe of choice is a 1976 Fender jazz with DL Fat Beam strings (Marcus Miller approved ;D) and a Seymour Duncan 3-way pre-amp that meant I had to machine cavities in the bass for the battery, the preamp, and a Strat-style jack:

X2 on the bentley.
I play a little guitar as well. I use SIT Nickel wounds on the Bass.

AND I thought I was a fool for the coin I spent on my Ric, but that Tobias would have been insane. What an amazing bass though.

That was a stab to the gut :P, I feel like a traitor now since a play electric guitar ;D.

I have the ibanez starter kit, paid $250 for it in '05. The gain knob failed right away so I just turn the volume all the way up and get lots of distortion that way :D.

Unfortunately I rarely play it and I've never been very good...........
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

no way. I play bass too!!! I used to play in diy punk bands, you know the get in the van kind of thing, but it has been years.
I used to play for hours a day, but now I am lucky if I pick up my bass once a month.
I am considering selling my 900watt amp and 2 ampeg cabinets and downsizing to a practice amp.
I rock a G&L L2000. 4 strings is all you need.

My skin is now shredding off all of my fingers on my left hand. It is almost as if I haven't played. My right index and middle fingers are pretty rough now too.

It is still fun though and getting better already.

well, it's not 'lectric, but my bass of choice was the old beat up unpronounceable european bass of my high school years. Looked like it got in a fight with a beaver, but it sounded quite nice.

I haven't played at all since I bought my TDI. drove it to florida, played my beatup epiphone viola 'lectric for my cousins wedding, and it's hung out in it's case since then.

I'd like to get that old bass from the highschool, along with their 5 1/3 octave marimba.
