how much smoke is too much?
« on: February 19, 2010, 05:39:58 am »
on start up in the cold 20 to 30F (or -6 to -1C) with the cold start pulled, i get steady white smoke for about 5-10 mins until the car is warmed up.

question is... is that too much? or there shouldn't be any at all?

i think my cold start needs to be adjusted anyways.

Are your glow plugs good? I get white smoke only while I am cranking. Once it starts, the white smoke is gone except for occasional puffs right at the exhaust pipe. And this is at -15C.

Check your timing, also your kold start solenoid on the pump (the other wire, not the shut-off solenoid) it advances the timing slightly when the pump is cold...if the smoke dissipates after 5 min of good driving (not idling) I woiuldn't worry...

I run my pump at 1.02mm, so with the advanced pulled it sits around 1.05mm.

I also run Bosch Duraterms, with the afterglow feature. I get smoke for the first 5 seconds of running then it is gone. I usually afterglow for 30 seconds.

If it is really bothering you, I would suggest the Duraterms with a manual controller. The afterglow really helps with cold combustion (keeping the precups at 400F, instead of allowing the combustion to heat them up)

yeah if i drive it right away it usually stops smoking with in 2-3 mins.

i think my pump is set at .90. i can't remember. i have the tool so maybe i'll screw around with it and see if i can make it alittle better.

I watched my tailpipe this morning on first startup at 30F, a nice puff of wonderful black smoke ;D and then it instantly cleared up and only puffed more black when I popped the go pedal. There was no white smoke at all.

Once when I installed the IP I had the belt a tooth off and it smoked white but it also ran horrible. From what I've read most people have good luck with .98mm-1.00mm.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.
