Car fire. Please help.

I have a 92 NA diesel Jetta. The wiring caught fire. I was able to get it out and save the car but I now have numerous wires burned and fused together under the dash.

I'm just going to look for a parts car to buy to get the harness out of. What I need to know is what year range of cars can I get that it would be a direct swap? And is the wiring the same for the golf and jetta?

90 and later cars were CE2 (Central Electric 2) so you'd need a 90-92 car. I would think the wiring would be the same in a gas car, but I'm not totally sure about that.

What if I swapped the entire harness from front to back? Could I go with an earlier car then?

probably....but that's way more work then just changing the affected wiring.

vwmike: is there any clear indication of whether or not a 1990 car is CE2 or not? it may help this guy to be able to distinguish between the two... plus i have a '90 that i'm not too sure on. says central electric.... but nothing about a '2'.

As I understand it, Jettas were CE2 from mid '89.

The problem is most of the wiring is affected. Pretty near everything behind the fusebox got affected in one way or another. After the fire I could get the car started up but that was about it.

Things affected:

Headlights were stuck on high beam
Front marker lights stuck on
No lights whatsoever in the rear
Hazards or signals wouldn't work.
Stereo wouldn't turn on.
Heater controls didn't work
Parking brake light always on
Ignition wires fused together so that when I turned the key off it was like I did nothing.

I figure it would just be easier to put in another complete harness than to sort that mess out.

Thanks for the help. You guys have any other ideas?

Well, that sucks...I guess just replace whatever you have to. You're kinda lucky though because if it was gas there would be more wires to replace  :)

There are sections which are different but in a CE2 application the different harnesses ought to plug into the fuse box.

Almost every wire from the gaz is the same of the diesel.

Only the harnes going to the ECU for the gaz is different, but you can use this wire and take the 2 first wire for the pump solenoid and the other one for the glowplug harness.

I didn't change any wire when i dropped a 1.9TD in my Jetta 90 1.88v. And ALL is working, including the tach (i put a tach from a jetta diesel on the harness of the gazzer).

Will a 1982 Rabbit Gas wiring harness work in a 1982 Diesel?

The 82 Diesel's wiring harness shorted and burned, so is it better to try to wire it up with the rabbit gas harness since I can't find a diesel replacement.

Or should I remove the burned wiring and try to replace the burned wires???

if you have enough room, just patch up the burnt wires and use some heat shrink.  if you cant, then find a wiring harness  (might be a good idea to switch to a thicker wire at this point as well...)
