So, apparently, your question is whether or not you can safely interchange a hydraulic N/A head with a hydraulic TD head....and whether or not the N/A head is adequately alloyed to survive the heat?

This topic was kicked around recently and I think Libby was wanting a definitive answer for it.

All I can say is that when I purchased a rebuilt head from (the "other" forum) Jack in Ohio over a year ago, Jack stated that there was "NO DIFFERENCE" in the "D" and "T" heads and that he could accept the standard (commonly supplied from the factory) "D" head (N/A supplied) to rebuild and then safely supply for a turbo application.

Furthermore, these hydro heads require the more expensive TRW valves (sodiums?) for rebuild.

However, this does NOT hold true for mechanical heads.
Anyone with an opposing view?

i would use whatever head i had to use to get the sodium valves. but i thought they only came in factory turbo engines?

of course you could buy them aftermarket and put them in whatever head you want.

So i called up the dealer this morning and you are correct they changed the exhaust valves on the turbo, the intakes are the same. I found the intakes for $12 each but i am having an issue finding the exhuast ones through the parts places my work can get good deals through. the stupid VW dealer want $40 a piece. Now the next question does any one know if there is any thing different in the bottum end?

Turbo engine uses oil squirting (piston) nozzles and the turbo crankshaft is drilled slightly different on the crank weights.
