New to the Diesel World!
« on: February 15, 2010, 04:31:20 pm »
Hello All,

Just picked up my first Diesel VW! 1985 Jetta Carat with a 1.6NA Diesel + ACH Tranny swapped in.

I've been reading the forum posts - lots of good information.

One question however; the car was purchased this past October, and  I will not be able to put the car on the road until this spring due to other life commitments etc... Should I be concerned that she will be parked for approx 6 months? The diesel currently in the tank was from the PO and filled up this past October. I have been getting it up to operating temperature weekly, and taking it for (illegal) laps around the block once every two weeks or so. Fuel gelled up once already during a cold snap we had, but has since thawed out. I have added a winter fuel additive, as well as preformed an oil/filter change. Is there anything I should be doing to ensure problem free operation this coming spring?

Any thoughts/comments would be most appreciated!

Many Thanks!
Casanis.

if your going to keep running it then I doubt anything will be a problem. It will keep the oil circulating, the battery charged up, and if u keep moving it, it should keep all the brakes and junk working a well. With the fuel additive in there as well.. you should be good to go :)

WHITBY!? I used to live in the Thickson and Thorton area :) Where abouts are you? Older part of town judging by your pictures.

Good luck in the Spring :)

WELCOME TO THE BOARD :P!!!!!

Yeah nice car for sure!

If you are going to continue driving it then just keep doing what you are doing. Although, presumably the trips are short and the engine oil may not be getting to temp (much slower then the coolant to get to temp) which could cause damage due to moisture build up in the oil.

If you are going to park it then just park it like you would any other car. When it is time to start it up again remove the vacuum pump and prime the oil pump to reduce wear.

Yes,, every Chevy small block I remaned or rebuilt I pulled the distributor and ran the oil pump with a drill prior to start.
