Watching the opening ceremonies

Good luck to all the athletes! Go USA, Go Canada!
So sad about the Georgian luger, that was brutal seeing those folks come in, I'm glad they decided to march.

I am watching it right now, and they are dragging everything out WAY to long! I'm bored, get on with it for crying out loud.

He died on a practice run

. First time to the Olympics.. 21 years old.. died pursuing his passion.
Flew off the track and hit a steel beam at close to 90 miles an hour.... was dead instantly they say

Poor kid was in over his head when he got to Vancouver... that's a dangerous track for people who know it well, god knows where he was training. He suddenly finds himself doing 90 MPH on an unfamiliar track, he panicked and lifted his head, then lost contol. Caromed off two banks, lifted off the sled and flew into a row of steel girders supporting the banked curve and roof. The video is all over the place. There was no netting or padding in that section, he didn't have a chance.

I heard them say today that the guy had ran that track like 20 times, I forgot the exact number, he just messed up and "happened" to go over the side......very sad

. His teammate dropped out of luge.
They showed the clip of the wreck on TV and it looked like the wind kinda picked him up and threw him over

It was his second practice run... The Canadian teams have been running that track for 2 years now so it's had a ton of runs on it, it's definitely a fast track - even after changing the starting point lugers were hitting the same speeds as he hit when he went off.
There actually has been a luge death in the Olympics before, back in 1964 which incidentally was the first year for luge as an Olympic sport. The '64 Olympics actually had two performance-related deaths, so we're thankfully not setting any records there (hopefully!!).
Definitely rough. Unfortunately doing just about anything at 143 km/h can easily be fatal, let alone having nothing but a skin tight suit and a helmet to protect you. His helmet actually shattered when it hit the pole - pretty hard to tell in the internet videos but when I was watching on my big TV you could see chunks go flying. There was no trace of movement afterwards - I doubt he felt a thing.
On another note, my city was thoroughly abused by some rampant delinquents today. They claimed to be "protesters" but showed up dressed all in black with black face masks, and started smashing in store windows and beating on police officers. Take off, eh!!

.

Shame the cops can't beat em like they used to. The Olympics ARE supposed to be politic-free. Good Luck.
Congrats to the US teams and our northern friends on their victories as well.
Stay safe, stay well. Jimmy.
