hi guys, i havn't had time for cars lately but that doesn't mean that i have not had problems. so i have questions. my 91 jetta eco diesel is getting harder to start and remember winter in so. florida is like 50 deg. farenheit at worst. when i turn the key on, my glow plug light only blinks once it dosen't stay on for like a warm up period and then go off. so i'm assuming i have a gp problem. how do i tell what the problem is how do i test them or could i have a faulty ignition switch that is not making the right connection to properly excite the glow plug circuit. any and all input is greatly appreciated. i really need to be able to rely on this car. thanks guys. also while driving down the road every so often the gp light will come on and stay on for a while.

al be sure

Doesn't the GP light coming on during driving mean that you have to empty the water separator?

My glow plug light likes to flicker when I'm driving. It varies in speed and intensity. I tried unpluging the relay once but it didn't stop so I'm going to wager the cluster is screwed up somehow.

When the glow plug light flashes while you are driving, it effectively means that you have to empty your water separator.

Mine flashes just about all the time, but I never get any water out of the separator.  Any idea how one of these separator / sensors works?

If I ever get around to cleaning out the trunk    I plan to disconnect the wiring to it.  Unless there is a way to fix it.

albsure,

Sounds to me like the fuse for the gp might be gone. It should be found on the firewall in the engine compartment. Its not coloured. It should be on the driver side part of the firewall.
