A2 Jetta AC/heater fan R&R???
« on: November 12, 2005, 08:03:09 pm »
My Bently is no help. I need to replace the heater fan in an 85 Jetta w/ac. Does anyone know if the dash needs to come off? Or is there another way?

Thanks!

There is a VW procedure for doing heater core with dash in.

maybe......
There is a VW recall notice on heater cores that includes a procedure for doing with the dash in.  Centre console and other plastic parts attached under dash got to come off, center part of defrost duct out, heater controls disconected, need to loosen mounting bolts on heater assembly to get at the clips that hold it together.  I did the heater core on my '91 Jetta in about 4 hours.  But it didnt have AC.  i think the fan was accessable once I got that far, but it was a couple years ago.

If your fan still runs but only at high speed, you dont need to replace it, just the $30 resistor/fuse pack that is on the outside of the housing.  Mine did that.

Busted link to a PDF of the procedure is below, I imagine that RC-92V050 is the recall #.  You might be able to get a printout from VW dealer?

Thanks LeeG, mine has AC. The non AC are a snap. Mine has a noisy bearing so the fan needs to come out.

That sounds about right though. Remave half dash and drop the box to remove the fan.

For the fan motor you don't need to remove the dash. First remove the glove box hinge pins then all the screws that hold the glove box in place. Removing the 8mm screw on the side of the dash helps to give a bit more room. The trick I found is to seperate the fan and fan motor from it's housing. Remove the wires to the fan first, then the 4 Phillips srews around the outside of the housing then the 2 Phillips screws nearer the center of the housing. The trick is to let the fan drop foward and remove just the black plastic housing first and then the motor with the fan blades seperately. To refit, practice fitting the motor to the housing so you're familiar with it's orientation, put the fan blades on the new motor and fit the motor and blades into heater box first. Then slide the housing up and reach behind to fiddle the motor into the housing. You'll know it's right if with good light you see the electrical connectors in proper position through the housing. Fit 2 inner screws first then 4 outer ones. Advise refitting electrical and testing before replacing glove box. I've done this several times, and this is the only method I've used, once in a parking lot with just long nose pliers and a screw driver.

Thanks mtnman, got it done. I discovered that by removing the screw in the rt end of the dash that the dash is flexible enough that I could pull it away far enough to just R&R the fan assy. Cool, works great now, no more growling.
