Smokey!
« on: January 27, 2010, 10:59:30 pm »
My 1.6NA still smokes with new injectors and .98mm timing,  It has to be the oil control rings.  I put in some new valve stem seals, and the smoking didn't stop.  My car doesn't smoke at idle, only when you get on it.  My compression test for the motor was all in the 450-480psi range.  My motor would stay at a high rpm if I floor it when accelerating or revving in place.  It runs great on the freeway, 55-65-70-75mph, essentially cruising it doesn't smoke.
I had rotella 5w-40 synthetic in there to clean/flush everything out after the valve stem seal install.  While running that oil, I would get the oil pressure light and buzzer when cruising and when accelerating, even though my oil level checked out fine.  I changed my oil to 15w-50 Mystik synthetic blend, now my oil pressure light never comes on.
I wonder if the synthetic was so thin and the crankshaft spinning so fast that it created some sort of a cavitation environment when the oil got hot?  I wonder if putting in one of those oil pan/crankshaft baffles would stop the oil being slung towards the bottom of the pistons/oil control rings from the crankshaft spinning and thus stop or reduce any oil consumption?

With the car running take the oil filler cap off. If it's puffing white smoke then rings are a fair bet. You might need to rev it up. Warning, if you don't have the cam cover then you will get oil all over your engine bay. If you don't have the cam cover, get one.

It sounds like your engine is a bit tired if 5W40 is causing your oil light to come on. Have you checked oil pressure?

bearing clearances are worn. stay with thicker oil. nothing you can do about those rings till teardown. drive it till it dies, then bottom end rebuild.

'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

This sucks, my car runs beautifully!  The only problem is oil consumption!  My car gets around 42-45mpgs with mixed city/highway driving, but consumes about 2.5-3qts every 150miles, or approximately 1qt every 50miles or so.  I know, that is just crazy!  I want to drive it from Northern California to Southern California, to rebuild the motor and all at my dads, I just don't know if I should.  I guess I can stop every 100 miles and dump 2-3qts of oil into the motor?

Cut a hole in the valve cover and run a hose with a funnel on the end of it from the valve cover hole in to the cabin right next to you and every 100 miles dump some oil in!

Long shot but any cracks in your vacuum line from the vacuum pump?

Excess air being drawn in to the crankcase will pressurize it and force oil to puke out of where ever it can right???

maybe even past the rings..?

Exactly. Or it might just be making extra blowby which the CCV is burning.

When it is light/brighter out, I will check to see if the vaccuum line is cracked or something.  Yeah, it is burning through 15w-50.  My odometer was at 180miles when I changed out the oil and oil filter with a new oil filter and 15w-50 oil, at 315miles, essentially 135 miles of straight freeway driving, my oil pressure light came on.  I slowly got off of the freeway.  I then turned off the motor and let it cool down to let any oil flow back down to the oil pan, about 30 minutes goes by, I check the dipstick and there is no oil even on the tip of the dipstick.  I checked 4 times just to make sure.  I put in about 2.5-3qts, started the motor, let it warm up, turned it off, waited about 45 minutes to let the oil drain to the pan.  I then rechecked the oil level and it is right at the full line, I checked 4 times again just to make sure.  Pretty bizarre right?  But I will definitely check the vacuum line, am I looking for a big crack or something?  Also, with the oil cap off, when revving the motor past idle, there is vacuum instead of pressure coming out of the oil fill hole.  Is this normal if the rings are worn?
Thanks

Worn rings typically cause pressure in the crank case..      IS your intake and air filter clear??   This is just a wild stab here, does your car have the rotary or diaphragm vac pump??
