its still gonna be either an IDI or TDI engine. and they arent really enough different that you can make power just by swapping parts. they are basically the same engine, just one is direct injected, and one is indirect injected. almost the same bottom end tho.

cheers mate, i'm not really that clued up on diesels, would using the ahu turbo inlet and intercooler make much difference, or would i be better using 1.6td pump etc? not working on a huge budget

The AHU has the D-shaped crank nose which is less prone to failure than the AAZ keyway nose. So which ever route you go you should use the AHU crank and pulley.
I used a 1Z crank in my AAZ for this reason.
Are you planning on running an ECM? the wiring could get complicated. I would go MTDI, or run the AAZ. The AAZ is a pretty straightforward swap into the MKI and it rips.
Does anyone know if an AHU will bolt to an 020. I Bentley says they came on the 1Z. If you have to swap to a cable shift that could be a chore.

its not just slap-some-parts-together-and-run affair, its much more in depth than that. if you dont know the differnece between a IDI and TDI, you should probably not try building one.

No need to be a Sour Puss Kev, why not take a little extra initiative and link them to some useful information instead of telling him he is stupid for trying?
Here you go Elbandito, I suggest you read up on this.
http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=20109.0They are two different engine, the AAZ and the AHU. If you have access to complete engines of both.. and you have all the wiring needed for the AHU by all means you will get more power with that route.. The AHU is a Direct Injection motor, which is completely different from the AAZ which is an Indirect Injection motor.. Both will be very torquey and ballsy in an mk1 chassis. It's up to you on how you want to do this.. Mechanical (AAZ) or Electronic (AHU)

AAZ will be at least a little bit easier, as there is no wiring involved.. no computer to worry about. Swap some motor mounts, hook up some coolant hoses, few electrical connections and your pretty much rollin'.
What do you want from the Caddy when you are done it?

and i dont think you can bolt an AHU crank in a AAZ block. if it has a reluctor ring, it wont fit.

I'm pretty sure an AHU crank will fit an AAZ block. The AAZ and AHU blocks are basically interchangeable. For that reason, a 020 trans should bolt to the AHU trans with no issue, aside from swapping between cable/rod shift and hydro/cable clutches

ok, well theres some sort of TDi's that have reluctor rings and oil pump drive sprockets on them. i know those are a little harder to get to fit in an aaz. thats what i was thinking is all.

ALH is the engine model after the 1Z/AHU TDIs. With that change there isn't much that will interchange. The 1Z/AHU bottom end is pretty much interchangeable with the AAZ aside from the pistons.
yes, thats what i was thinking. im just not as clued in with the TDI's as i am with the idi's. knew there was a difference, just wasnt sure what engines.

do the TDi crank nose conversion on the AAZ and build the PISS out of it.
