WTB MK3 Glow plug relay.
« on: January 20, 2010, 02:46:12 pm »
I'm looking for a "known good" glow plug relay that has the "after glow", and no Gee-Bee not one from Ebay. Dealer wants $140 and up for them.

Does that have one really large pin? Im showing 038-911-253 VW or Bosch # 0281 003 013. I looked up a 98 Jetta. I can do the Bosch for 50 + shipping.

A caution:  on an MK3 the glow plugs are controlled by two separate pieces:

1)  a control module:  listens to the coolant sensor, drivers door, makes decisions about how long the plugs should be on, drives the light on the dash etc
2)  the glow plug relay:  takes on/off instructions from the control module and switches the 60 amps of current safely

The control module is a large module with about 16 pins and in and of itself not able to drive glowplugs.  The glowplug relay is a small 4-pin device that has two large pins to handle the current.

Picture of both of them side-by-side on my website about 3/4 of the way down this page:
