new battery plugs and connectors my car will now start at -10 *c pretty pumped about it. it still needs work so im gonna rebuild the engine in the spring. I was just wondering how much more power/torque does a 1.9turbo have i have a 1.6turbo and id like to get more power out of it when i rebuild/replace the engine. does anyone have pictures of intercooler setups on this engine. this is the first diesel i have had ever. And the more i learn/know about it i get more pumped on it.any knowledge/info shared is greatly appreciated.
blowing black soot for days!
Why are you going to rebuild it? The last one I did a total rebuild on was a waste of time and money - it was a 79' w/o the oil spray baffle, so the blow-by was carrying a lot of oil with it. It was showing 150,000 miles on the odometer. I have no way to know what it really was. I bought the car for $50 and immeadiately changed the oil to Mobile-1. That was at about 100,000 miles. Only because I thought the rings were worn did I knock it down. What I found was the hone cross hatch marks were still visible on 50% of the bore, that the rings were all in perfect order and in spec. The bearings and valves also, in spec. I had already ordered a full rebuild kit, so I did it anyway. It was nice to have the clean painted block, but w/o the baffle (I did not know about them back then) my blow-by oil consumption did not change much.
That is why I ask. My current engine is an 84' that I turbo'd and its in a 4,000 pound Dodge caravan - more than enough power and who knows how many miles. Starts well at zero F !! Did you pimp your glow plugs yet?
well it needs all new seals and stuff anyway and timing belt the 1st and second owner did not seem to take much care of it plus its got 456,*** k on it and it would be cheap enough to do i wont be doing it to summer since i plan on repainting/rewiring the whole thing. and figure i might ass well do it all in one shot thats why i was thinking maybe a 1.9turbo swap and intercooled might be a good change.
im new to this so i dont know what you mean by pimp my glow plugs. basically i want to do a full rebuild o the car eventually and id like to take into the mountains when its done thats kinda why i want to get some more power out of it. i dont plan a full rebuild of the engine if it doesnt need it but id like to get another 1.6 or 1.9 to rebuild and just swap in so when its painted and rewired i can just swap the engine in.
That def would make changing glow plugs alot easier. ill save that page for when i start to do my engine im gonna cut out the rust spots and do body work first since i know more about that im just trying to find information about the engines first.
Also from Vince, how to set the timing;
http://vincewaldon.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=24&Itemid=28Yeah, not only does it make it super easy to change the wires.. it makes it super easy to test each one individually without having to take off the buss bar! and the bigger wiring gauge will make sure as much power as possible is actually getting to the plugs
good luck.
my old '86 only started with the cold start cable pulled... lucky to get it to start at -15c too... if you get into trouble just use some brake parts cleaner sprayed into the intake. guaranteed to start!

that crap isnt even made to burn tho... it kills a gasser engine deader than crap.
