Check out this weird-looking intake manifold:
It's some sort of variable runner length intake manifold that was developed for a VW SDI motor.
Which application, or if it ever made it into production, I don't know. Has anyone heard of this or seen it before?
i have one of those on my mazda. its got 2 very distinct and seperate intake manifolds, although it has only 1 throttle boby. there are 4 butterfly valves, 1 for each runer, that open at 5250 rpm to change tbetween the very long runners (for low end power) and the very short runners (for more top end).
having such a intake on a vw diesel would be a really cool idea.
VR6 engines have been using a variable intake for a long time. Pretty nifty idea. That picture you posted, Jake, is from engine code BDJ, which is a 2.0 SDI engine, 77 hp. Found in 04 Caddys, and 04-05 Golf.
Euro only, of course. Part number is: 038 129 711 CB, and the "throttle body" is a separate piece, 038 128 063 C.
You should see the hoses and tubes that come from the air cleaner!! What a mess!!!

But the SDI manifold worked nicely in my Passat though, although I cannot say if it did any distinguishable difference...
Brendan, thanks for the info. It's good to know it actually made it into production. I wonder if it would hold up to boost pressure?
TDIMeister, I will test my long runner (but not variable) intake I am currently working on for my Rabbit GTD autocrosser versus the stock "no runner" turbo-diesel intake manifold, so we'll know if the plenum and longer runners really help a turbo-diesel or not (and how much
)
