hi, let me introduce myself...I'm 17, bought an 89 non-turbo diesel golf for my first car, plan on autocrossing this year (i raced my friends dads mustang last year), my car is stock, but hopefully not for long, and as cheap as possible. I am also a part of the vwvortex forum, and they know nothing about diesel improvements....they said if i adjusted a screw on the injector pump (the one that limits max. throttle) id get 10-12HP...well thats a lie, i get nothing but more but black smoke. i was wondering if you guys could help me out...i cant afford to turbo or put on propane/nitrous, so what else besides a K&N can i do to get a little more power outta my car?

on vortex they told me 2"-2 1/4" would be too big and id loose too much low end torque because of lost back pressure....im so confused :?

It doesn't on my TDI, because the turbo sucks whatever air it needs, but on a D, would you gain a little something?

I know nothing about IDI engines, so this is only a guess from me guys. :wink:

Setting timing accurately requires the use of a dial indicator screwed into the injection pump. The procedure is described fully in the Bentley manual (you DO have a Bentley, right? It's required to be a mamber of this forum!!!).

wellll no....u see, their $90, and i have $0 cause insurance in canada sucks ass, and im paying $2400 a year so all my money goes to that [and fuel] (the odd time ive got some extra money)

so could someone please scan that page and post it up?

you're 17 and you're only paying $2400? i wouldn't complain... you're probably under your parents plan eh? i pay significantly more than you, '82 rabbit, and i'm 22. imagine what they want for the corrado.  :evil:

a bentley is the first thing you need. you can find one used, and even new i doubt a diesel bentley is going to be $90. i found the corrado one on ebay new for $75US and the corrado ones are much more expensive than the diesel bentleys.

you're not going to get very far with mods if you don't have money for even a manual... not trying to be a jackass, just the way it is. you're interested in 2"-2.5" exhaust... the downpipe alone (unless you can make it yourself) is going to run you around $150-250 minimum. then you have to buy a muffler, resonator, and get the rest of the piping bent up. you should sit down and list off the modifications you'd like to make, put them in a logical order (i'm sure the guys here and old forum posts can help you with that), and then budget them out... save your nickels until you can afford what you want to do. i work fulltime and i still don't have as much cash to throw at modifications as i'd like. i'd like to get out to an auto-x or two this summer as well, but i need to be realistic.

is the golf your daily driver? i'd put my cash into maintenance and making sure everything is top notch in that respect. a stock NA diesel will be slow on the course, but if its your daily driver..... you don't want to have something break at the track and leave you without a vehicle.

well as you know I to live in Bowmanville and and I have a 91 jetta 1.6TD ,If you need any assistance or help I'm here ,I have the tools including the dial indicator. where abouts are you located?Im on Maple Grove RD.

I agree with BlacktieTD, do the general maintenance for now.

If money is tight now here's what you should do:

1. Change all fluids for the best (or OEM) you can find. Don't be cheap on that cause you might regret it.

Things like tranny oil too (it's dead simple). :wink:

2. Change all filters.

3. Make sure nothing else is loose or will eventually need replacing (CV boots, tie-rods, wheel bearings, front and rear suspension bushings).

4. Put good fuel in it with some sort of additive and diesel on!

I have a turbo, so it's considered a "sports car" even though it's a station wagon.... :roll:

regarding the cost of the downpipe... i just called up alex at brullen in markham to get an idea of what it would cost to have a downpipe fabbed up. 2.5" stainless, all bends mandrel, without cat, is going to run 2 or 3 hours of labour and a total cost of $300-400 for just the downpipe, not including the rest of the exhaust system, and not including the ceramic coating i want to have done as well. pricey!  :?

thanks man , maybe sometime i can come over and get some help and borrow your dial indicator....im over in aspen springs, just about 5 mins from you (im on westside dr.) i would like to advance the timing on my pump

not sure, but i've heard about their work quite a bit over in the vortex and when i bought my G60 it had a brullen muffler on it. they seem nice enough on the phone, honest, straight-forward.

$2400 seems like a good deal then... i know of 17 year olds with clean records that can't even get coverage other than facility. $200 a month seems cheap for your age. when i was 17 (5 years ago before all this insurance industry BS) i paid $170/month with full coverage. now i can't even justify paying for collision coverage at the rates they charge. i wish i could go back to the good ol' days.
