1.6td in clouds of smoke

i have a problem with 2 x 1.6 turbo diesels , both just been transplanted both with same problem ,1 runs rough till revs start building but clouds of white smoke ,the other 1 idles ok revs very responsive pulls amazing but cannot see anything behind it bar a cloud of thick white smoke ,valve and pump timming has been checked and set but still smokes like crazy, also has new fillters on it , the pump seals are not on it as if someone has been in at the pump so i screwed the star wheel back a couple of turns, turned plunger,to minimum fuel and backed smoke screw on top of the pump a couple of turns,getting fissed off with it now so any help much apreciated

FWIW, I had this same basic problem when I first transplanted my 1.6TD and changed filters, etc.  It would smoke very badly (puffy, white smoke) while I ran it for the first 30 minutes or so testing it on and off.  It was sitting in the driveway at that point.  Very disconcerting.  Not the first thing I wanted to see with my newly transplanted motor.

Thankfully, the white smoke went away after I started driving the truck.   After the first long test drive, it ran normally.  I believed that it was air in the lines or the remants of some cr_ppy fuel.

Later on, I checked the timing and found it to be somewhat retarded as compared to the recommended settings.  While I don't think that was the sole cause of the smoke, I believe it contributed...

The smoke smells like diesel, and not coolant I hope?  Sounds sort of like retarded timing perhaps.  Does the cold start advance help any?  Have you let it get up to operating temperature? If it's just been transplanted, it could be still burning off all kinds of moisture/oil/sealant/etc from when it was taken apart.  My truck always makes white smoke when first started when cold, but goes away when warmed a little -- usually within a minute at most.

yes smoke smells like diesel,
cold start in when timming done,
took it about a 10 mile run no difference but i will try a longer run i just need to watch for the law,
