NEW-B here... Just a couple basic Q's

Hey what's up... Found the link to this forum off of the TEX...

Anywho...

My buddy just got a 1990 1.6L Jetta TD.... I've been doing some reading on here about modifcations... but here's the story.

The Jetta he bought was a 2 door, so we swapped it into his 4 door shell... well the TD came with no TACH... only the ugly clock

Anyways... We got a boost guage, and we're trying to hunt down a stock cluster w/ TACH... I understand that an EGT guage is pretty much a must when playing with fueling/boost on diesels, is this true?  Or can I get away with just "watching" the smoke?  And if we did get an EGT, what would be nominal temps?

I've done searches on LDA, govener, and boost mods...

Although I'm sort of confused about the LDA mods... It seems like LDA is boost enrichment... but I haven't really seen any threads about modifying it (I wen through all 3 pages of serach results), so any clarification would be great.

As far as the govener mod goes, it seems pretty straightforward but I'm guessing we should have a tach before doing it.

Boost wise... from what I've gathered from thread on here.. If we have the metal wastegate line (which we do) then we're running/have the KKK turbo... some people say K14 others say K24, which one is it?

In the end, without going nuts like changing pumps, and injectors, etc...  What's the best way to get a little more out of the TD?

Adjust the pump timing? the Govener mod? and just add boost?  Will that be safe?

An exhaust will be put on the car from the turbo back 2.5" pretty much right away, since the old exhaust has already rotted through..

What I'm trying to make sure is that the engine will be getting enough fuel w/ the extra boost... as I'm not fully understanding how to add more fuel.

BTW, what's the max boost u can run w/o an intercooler?  And would a 1.8T intercooler be good enough for moderate boost levels that can be produced by the stock turbo?

Any thought's would be great!  8)

I'm not saying to follow what I do, but I'm running about 25 psi out of the stock garret turbo. No intercooler yet. The LDA pin is rotated full rich with the starwheel wound down and 2.5" exhaust from the turbo back. I still wouldn't call it fast, but it's a significant improvement. I rarely see EGT's over 1000 because I don't have hills that long around here. I'm also not pushing a Vanagon so it is much easier on the engine. It is currently running out of fuel, I'd guess in the low 20's with GTD nozzles. I have a 12mm pump that I modified using VW and Peugeot components but I need to have my friend machine a pulley for me since it uses a big input shaft (the pump was new, otherwise I would have put the components onto a VW pump). I've got my hopes up that it will make a big difference  :D
