How is VW Handling Recalls on A-2 and B-3 bodys

I see 1992 recalls on the
www.dmv.ca.gov website in regards to the heater cores. I own 3 Passats, 90-93. One I had to pay for a heater core last summer. Now I think one of my 92 Jettas may be leaking.
Is VW still honouring the recalls? Understanding its been 10 years, but....

and those of us who own 20 or so....CLOUT? Brother does that Ford 500 look nice.... :wink:

As a former VW employee, it shouldnt be a problem. I think in the year that I worked there, I saw three sciroccos come in for the fuel tank recall. Thankfully, there werent a lot of recalls on most of the older VW's. I say go for it.
Doing the heater core on pretty much any car is a real ***. Best to do it on somebody elses watch.

VW of America currently seems to be replacing heater cores in many of their cars for free, seemingly regardlesss of model, year, or mileage, even if it's not covered by a recall. All you have to do is get it diagnosed as a leaking heater core first by a VW dealer (so you will have to bring it in and incur the risk of them diagnosing it as indeed a leaking heater core), and then once the diagnosis is official, call VWoA customer service line and ask if they will cover it for "goodwill".
Sounded pretty amazing to me, but I got all costs covered to replace a 1995 Passat's heater core replaced by VW this way. There was no heater core recall for the 1995 Passat. I was thrilled I didn't have to do it myself because of all the work required to disassemble the dashboard, etc get at it (I hear when the car were built, they started with a heater core and built the rest of the car around it. :lol: )
Of course, if there is actually a recall out for your specific car for replacing the heater core, that could only make it easier. Assuming the recall is still valid, you should be able to call up a VW dealer of your choice, give them your VIN #, and have them schedule in advance you for the free recall work (which would be performed regardless of whether the old heater core is actually leaking or not, I think).

I have paid for replacement in 2 92 Pasasts, and now my 90 Jetta ia leaking
If figure at 800 bucks a pop VW should step up to the plate
I went on
www.vw.com. I sent customer service a message telling them I own upwards to 20 Volkwagens
I asked them how they are handling the recalls I saw on the web site of
www.dmv.ca.govQuite frankly I am tired of paying to have cores replaced. VW either screwed up or the supplier was a total dirt bag
My 90 Jetta is now dumping fluid all over the floor
I could of bought a 92 Passat last week with a bypassed heater core for peanuts
I really really want a 92 Passat automatic, but hate the idea of picking up the hood and seeing the core bypassed
Lets see if VW will take care of things

Here is the latest.
I spoke to VW of America. They will stand behind any Passat, Jetta and/or Golf that I have that needs a core. All I have to pay for is the parts....All 20 some A-1's, A-2's and B-3's. They even mentioned they might want to look at several of my Vanagons for headgasket leakage. Whether or not the car or van or truck is covered under recall they will warant any "internal" part.
Cores have been a problem. So has headgaskets in the waterboxers. Even my diesel Vanagon will get a once over check by the dealer.
Then came the dealer! What a sorry group of mobsters! They wanted to charge me $90 bucks diagnoses. Yeah right...I probably know more than their whole staff of technicians!
Luckily, we are getting a new dealer within a month or so. It is my understanding from Michigan VW Corporate, that I should wait until the new dealer comes online, since the other dealer is on the skids big time with VW.
When the rep calls again I will see if I can go to an independant shop.
So....we get new cores in all the cars. Or at least if they are leaking for showing signs of possible leakage. Even the R-12 AC cars! Even the Caddy truck! Impressed!
Oh yeah, Recalls never expire....now, all those Pinto's....
:lol: And unexpected...I expected VW to shine me on. I guess once they got all the VIN numbers on record they realized....better hose up to the place and take care of this customer. Those new Toyotas don't look at the great anymore :roll:

Looks like I have the dreaded leaking heater core. Driving home the other night and noticed steam coming out of the vent followed shortly by the coolant light. Fortunately, no coolant on the floorboard. Called VW and now have a case number. Now to bypass the heater core so that I can get it to the dealer to diagnose. I will let you know how it goes. If they pay for mine, they should pay for anyone (b/c the car has 300,000 miles).

The Dealer here just told me to shove my car up my ass when I asked.
They don't work on 2001 and under causew they don't pay enough.

When I worked at the dealer they honoured the recalls with a catch-if that twenty year car needed a heater core they would look it over carefully for an excuse-like your aftermarket stereo wiring job being all over the place, or alarm or robinson screws everywhere then toss the new part in the trunk and get paid for anyways by VWoA.
Same for the hot air pick up on Digifant Golf/Jetta if the manifold was rusty they wouldn't do it without charging for a new exhaust manifold job which usually meant re and re the head due to broken studs...

Looks like I'm getting the run around. Dealer wants $90 to provide the written diagnosis (I told them to jump in a lake). Called VW of America and told them I could get them a diagnosis from my independent mechanic and informed them that my mechanic would do the work (b/c I don't trust the dealer). VW said they would look at my repair order from the independent to determine if they would help. I'm not holding my breath, but it was worth a shot.

its harder to get them to honour recalls up here in canada for some reason. technically VWoA and VWoC are the same people (right now... that will be changing) so i don't understand the discrepency.
a few years back my 1990 corrado blew the heater core... i couldn't get the dealer to cover it as a recall so i bypassed it under the hood :cry:
