1986 Jetta GL 1.6l TD 223,000mi MF engine code
Everything works on the car except the a/c (which i yanked out to save weight since the compressor was shot). Runs pretty
good. Been reliable. 32-35 city 35-40mpg highway
With the price of diesel and lack of servicing available in my area, its just not feasable for me to own the car.
Its been fun and diesels are cool, but i dont live in an area that supports diesels (except semis and
thats limited) and service is expensive at the nearest place some 150miles away. I hate to rid of the
car, but id rather it be with a diesel fanatic who has the means of being able to service it. Ive done
lots of work to the car and it needs a bit more yet. heres the low down of it all...
Fixed/replaced:
new brake pads and shoes
cleaned up the rotors/drums and calipers a bit and regreased caliper slides where needed
flushed brake system and fixed parking brake
upgraded to the 210mm clutch (disc, flywheel, plate) from stock 200
replaced axle flange seals, tranny flushed and refilled with syn gear oil
replaced a couple CV boots on axles. Cleaned up joints and repacked with new VW CV joint grease
complete new shift linkages from ***er to tranny
springs on all 4 corners from 16V (little stiffer than stock)
new poly control arm and poly sway bar bushings
new ball joints/tie rod ends/upper mounts/new shocks/strut cartridges
upper and lower stress bars installed
new wheel bearings on all four corners
new fuel filter, new glow plugs, new head gasket, and new radiator
new alt/water pump and timing belts, new pump thermostat
replaced heater blower fan and switch
fixed ventilation system inc cleaning out/unplugging heater core
fixed dash lights, horn, radio, new antenna, door handles, installed rear speakers
sealed windshield
installed door panels pockets and speakers
oil pressure/boost guage/voltmeter guages installed
Needs fixing/future maint due:
rear trailing arm bushings ( have them just but not installed yet)
rear spindles need shims installed to correct camber (have the shims too)
im sure Inj Pump could use rebuilding soon (guessing due to miles)
injectors checked and rebuilt
any other normal maint for higher milage car
needs a better radio personally - current works, but could use better
Car started fine last winter and has up to date so far. Smokes a bit when cold but goes away when warm. Fueling is set on the
lighter side to for better milage. Ive ran PowerSerivice cleaner/antigel/pump lube year round. Timing is set to spec. Did oil
changes every 2500 miles and used Mobil Delvac 1500 summer and Syn Mobil for winter. Tires are in decent shape yet although
the rims are mismatched. Been that way since ive had the car. Rims i have on it now are from an early model Audi that i
repainted and that set stays with me so the originals it came with to me with will go back on. I dont know how long these
engines will go, but ive heard a long time. i dont know if it needs a rebuild or not, but even if it does, its worth the
money. I cant service diesels so Ill just stick with my gas Audis. If any questions feel free to ask at
[email protected]. i
can send a couple pics that i took back in the springtime after it got a wash LOL
Make me a good offer. Thanks for your interest!
