Engine Swap from Non-Turbo 89 to Turbo 92
« on: October 28, 2005, 10:45:09 am »
Hi all,

I'm just getting started on my convo from the 1989, non-turbo engine to the ALH. When I pull the engine from it, I want to put it into my dad's 92 TD (Engine Code MF) while I rebuilt his.

There's no intercooler on the 92 TD, so is this pretty much a direct swap? Waddaya think?

Options that the TD has that the 89 currently doesn't
Turbo (duh!)
Cruise control
different cluster (don't know if it's related).

Thanks in advance dudes....

No opinions? Come on. Someone's got to have done it....or at least the reverse...

Your swap should be straight forward. There are no real additional electronics that come as an issue and as long as you are transplanting the entire motor it should be easy out, easy in. As far as wiring goes...well, wiring is pretty much non existing...

As far as cruise control and cluster.
NA motor into the Turbo car...so...simply, you don't have to worry about any of that. Just use the "underhood" components of cruise to the NA motor  and it should setup just the same. Without issue...that includes the sensor you'll see on the injection pump throttle cable bracket (a switch) and the cruise vac. canister. Thats if you want to run cruise on the car.

Not sure what the different in cluster would be. Maybe one has a tachometer...one doesn't? If so...it can be easily wired as 85+ whether it had a tach or not has the basic harness for the tach to be powered of the alternator's "W" terminal. I think this covers your questions... the best that I can read "what" your lookin to find. You should just plug in an be fine.

As far as other things. Well...the NA's intake is all self contained so you'll want to remove the TD intake bits and store them of course. Other than that...its straight forward just thinkin off the top of my head...

Hmmmm, thought I'd replied to this already.

I don't care if cruise doesn't work. It's just until the TD is rebuilt (we'll make it better   ). The 89 has a cluster with the clock built in. The TD has the tach. If needed, I can swap the clusters as I don't need the 89 stuff any more (I have the NB cluster to go with the TDI swap).
