Me too.  We're trying to get a pretty nice '81 diesel caddy that someone did a hack job of converting to gas with a 1.7 carbureated engine, but is in good condition otherwise.  We want to go back to diesel.  Anyone in the Western US, preferrably in Colorado?

Ye hah.  We got the old caddy.  Nice condition, almost no rust, and only a tiny bit of bondo on the rear wheel wells.  It's also a five speed, which I didn't even know they made back in '81.   Going to tow it up here tomorrow.   Hopefully it'll be pretty easy to revert it back to being diesel once we get an engine.  It's actually getting the full straight veggie oil dual tank fuel system, along with my rabbit.

Anyone want a 1.7l carburated gas VW engine????  Sort of runs.

I lost count of how many of those I've thrown away a long time ago.

I generally don't keep anything less than a 1.8L gas engine....but if I ended up with any diesel stuff I'd hang onto that just because you're lucky to get a deal on anything at all.

put the 1.7 up for sale on the vortex www.vwvortex.com and you should get a bite depending on the price. Alot of guys will use the 1.7 crank, rods, etc. in different combinations with the 1.8 and make a hell of a nicely stroked motor.

The 1.7 crank is still an 86.4mm stroke like the 1.8. It has different journals to fit the 136mm rods like the G60 though so it's really only useful if you want to use G60 or Audi MC pistons to create a low compression 1.8  Some of the '84 cranks had later style indexing but the earlier ones use a key that is known to shear off at a little over 200hp.

That 1.7 has the same stroke, rod and main journals as a 1.6TD, and it's a forged crank if it;s the right engine code. Anyone know if it's the same part #?

the combination I was thinking of that I've seen done for budget racers, etc. is the MC code audi pistons with the 1.7 crank to build quite the little motor for what it'd cost to build. It is also a forged crank. Not a bad thing for a budget motor and the crank can be modified for a harden key and keyway as I've seen done on a Rabbit that a friend had built...no problems there and that little motor is crazy at speed. Just doesn't start very nice :)

thought I'd bring this back up :)
I'm getting the Rabbit ready for summer and would like a spare motor or at least a spare IP.
Thanks!  8)
