I called the guy about this engine and he claims it's an official VW of Canada rebuild. He bought it at auction and doesn't really know anything about it. Is there any chance it's an AAZ? Wonder how hard it would be to find a donor to get the stuff to make it run?

Interesting. . . thanks for the info. He told me it was a 1.9 which would make sense IF it was out of a Vanagon.

Wouldn't it be a gasser then?

The block only has a D on the back does this not mean it is definitely a 1.5? as 1.6D was on the 1.6's? or so ive read, i think. lol

HUH?? it has a D on the block, and its obviously a diesel engine anyway. it has injector and glow plug holes.
and yes 8v, you are correct. the 1.5 have a straight D, the 1.6 engines say 1.6D (even the turbo engines) and the 1.9's say 1.9D/TD

If it's a 1.9 from a Vanagon it would be a gasser is what I was trying to ask.

Vanagon 1.9's look like this

Gas only.
I don't know what the heck it is in the picture. Not a vanagon engine.

looks like a vw rebuilt 1.5L diesel
the green paint is a sign of a vw rebuild(although someone could have painted it themselves)
and the "D" on the block shows that it is a 1.5L diesel
sounds like this fellow either has no idea what he has, or is hoping that the buyers wont know what he has, and pawn a 1.5 off for the price of a 1.9.

alright, gotcha, i didnt expect you to think it was (the diesel in the pic) a gasser. you are smarter than that. lol now it makes sense.

Duh, yes. . . I think so. I haven't had a Vanagon for about five years. Never had a diesel Van. So, when the guy said 1.9 Vanagon diesel I was none the wiser.
I gave my Vanagon Bentley away, but just looked up parts and Vanagon diesels were apparently all 1.6l. At least that's what it looks like.
Gasser Vans
were 1.9 and then 2.1 starting in about 1987.
I've got a 78 Rabbit with a very tired 1.5l. I may go down and look at this over the weekend. My concern is that the rust isn't only on the outside. IF he has paperwork verifying the rebuild, I might offer him about half what he's asking. My thinking being that it should bolt right up to what I already have.
and finally, I just rang him back up and he wants $600. . . not too sure about that.
thanks for the info

where else are you going to get a brand new (basically) diesel engine? 1.5 engines run great and last forever, even with some performance out of them.
