1985 Jetta fresh air blower removal
« on: January 12, 2010, 10:58:56 am »
I have a 1985 Jetta and am trying to get the fresh air blower/fan out from under the dash. I have no fan to blow the air for the heater and it's getting cold here in Georgia. I have removed the panel under the dash under the glove box and was able to remove 2 of the screws but there is a screw at the top of the fan housing as close as I can figure and I can't seem to find the way to remove the glove box to get to it. I have the manual but some things are kinda vague.

Forget this question. I found the hidden screws.

I got to the fan and it is good. In fact it blows more air than some of the other cars I"ve seen. I do have a question. Where is a good place to start looking? I don't want to pull the dash out to find something simple.

I would check and see if the squirrel cage is slipping under load. The fan switch. The blower motor resistor. Just about everything electrical from the fuse on. If you have it out you should be able to look around as well to see if something isn't letting it spin.

The fan spins freely. Something up the line. How much trouble is it to get into the controls in the dash? How often does the thermofuse go out? I checked mine and it looks like it's dead. Where is a good place to get the thermofuse if it's bad?

I got the resister yesterday and put it in today. Still doesn't work. Guess I"ll take a look at the controls. I checked the old resister and it checked bad. I"ll pull the new one and compare readings to see if they read the same.

I've seen switches go bad.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Do you mean the switch as in the dash controls? Are you refering to the double set of controls or the single control that is to the left of the stacked controls?

I finally got brave and went into the dash and tried pulling the heater controls but something is holding them in place. Cables? Anyway, I checked out the fan switch and somebody has taken it apart in the past and from the looks of it they just put the parts back together any old way. After cleaning the switch, all of it, I put it back together and it works fine. I had started to order one but figured I didn't have anything to loose so I pulled the old switch apart. That is about the simplest switch I"ve seen in a while.
