I must ask can you put some pictures of that engine or some link tnx.
http://s659.photobucket.com/albums/uu319/done/It's a mk2 Golf, with 1.6 bottom end and 1.9 head, you can see the dyno plot on the album there.
But this is just one example, I know of at least two other 1.6s with 250 hp or more. I don't have those
dyno plots, but I can tell you the information is reliable ( I have seen quarter mile footage of one of them, and
have a witness for the dyno run of the other)
It isn't so special that you can get that kind of power out of these engines; the real trick would be to make
them driveable. That is something I have yet to see on high-power 1.6s. And I'll be going after ~220 hp with
good driveability myself.
If you think about IDI diesels, when you know that the Mercedes 12V 3.0 diesel can be made to produce more than 500 hp, that's 167 hp / litre +. And those hp number are made with no internal engine mods on the Mercs...
So 270 hp for a 1.6 and 315 hp for a 1.9 should be well within reach (and as for the 1.6 has already been done).
And come summer there will be one VW 1.9 IDI that will comfortably beat that 315 hp marker. A friend of mine is having Aki build him what I belive is the most exotic VW IDI yet built

- TDI block, SDI crankshaft, PD 140 timing assebly, Pauter rods with AAZ pistons, heavily modified AAZ head, high-lift camshaft, special valves, 3-plenum intake, tube header, compound turbos with the bigger being rated for ~450 hp and a custom14 mm pump.
When that one is finished, we should see how far the 1.9 can reach
