TDI rebuild questions:
« on: January 02, 2010, 05:05:50 pm »
I’m rebuilding a 98 AHU TDI for a Vanagon conversion and have a couple questions.

1.It appears that the rear crankshaft seal has worn a groove in the crankshaft. Are there any seals available that position the seal lip at an offset away from the groove.

2.The cylinders have no wear marks or wear edge at on the TDC. I like to replace the rings just in case. Any recommendations on the ring replacement? Brand / source?

3.Is there anything else that should be replaced / upgraded at 100.000 miles?

Was there sufficient reason to rebuild a TDI at 100K?  Should just be getting broken in.

The rear crank seal issue might be resolved if you could find a supplier who offers a speedy sleeve.  I've used them many times in heavy applications but I'm not sure if they're offered for VWs or not?

well, I got the engine out of a salvage vehicle and wanted to make sure all is OK before I progress with my conversion. I was not able to find anything wrong with the exception of this sealing surface. Even it is a minor groove I will investigate the speedy sleeve.

An additional question I have is the balacing of the fly wheel.
The AHU engine came out of a stick shift. Should I rebalance the crankshaft with the old 1.6 flywheel?

No, they are internally balanced.  Use german rings, goetze are preferred.
