Opinions would be helpful :)

Hi there everyone. So, i am thinking about buying an aaz to swap into my 89 jetta as an upgrade (1.6 has leaking head gasket and burning a lot of oil with 393XXX on it). The guy is asking $1200 CAD for the engine with 330XXX on it as well as a fairly fresh clutch (20,000km's) and a resealed IP. I checked the coolant res. for bubbles, checked around the head for leaks and it looks good, starts up fine. This was the first place i thought to ask advice, any advice would be much appreciated. So what do you think? is it a fair deal?

$1200 for just the engine??
Seems awfully high! I haven't paid that for any of the diesels I have and that was for a complete car that was still repairable to drive on the road.... Just my thought...

Ok thanx for the opinion
diesels on the west coast are not as common as diesel on the east coast where you are, thats probably why. Rebuilt 1.9 longblocks around here go for over $2000. Hmm still weighing it...

Even high km cars in less than great shape rarely go below 2 grand for mk3's and maybe 1500 for mk2's
any diesel out here for under a grand is beat to ***.

It's amazing how wide a range in pricing there is from one part of Canada to another. Maybe it's not such a bad deal then... Hopefully someone closer will chime in. Happy New years!

I would definitely check out the crank sprocket with that kind of mileage. They are known to fail on AAZ's.

We do it at the shop for around $500 *I think*. That includes a new belt and tensioner.
