Hissing sound at pulley side. Any ideas?
« on: December 28, 2009, 06:51:33 am »
I was getting to work today and when I was at the garage ramp waiting for the barrier to open, I noticed some hissing sound coming from the passanger side. Did a quick check, alt and PS pulleys seem ok, but the noise starts as soon as the engine starts turning.

I will be checking all belts, pulleys and Tbelt tensor thoroughly later on. Any ideas of what else to check?

Thanks in advance.

T-belt tensioner comes to mind.......
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

We have a winner!  :)

And it is (was) a new tensioner, from a new SKF T-belt kit with barely 15.000 km on it. Guess I'm not lucky with spares lately. Will find another one and replace it, even if the noise became quite quieter now.

:D Was it a constant hiss or did it vary?

Mine does an intermittant/regular timed hiss, it did it with the old tensioner a year or two ago too though so maybe it's something else.

It is variable in loudness.. sometimes it's almost impossible to hear above the "clackaclacka", but sometimes not.. it's like a giant hairdryer.

Tomorrow I have some spare time, will check it up with my trusty ol' mechanician.
