Hi everyone, new to the site, and I have a problem with my car...(like you've never heard that before)

This morning leaving for work, i noticed a clunk that got worse.  Seems like when i let off the clutch it happens.  Noticed that when i decelerate it also clunks, not so much when accelerating.  Also it seems to be coming from the front drivers side, which makes me think its a CV joint; although it doesn't clunk around turns and you can't feel it in the steering wheel, or something driveline related.  I have a feeling it may have something to do with the clutch... any thoughts anyone? did some browsing sounds like some people have had this problem before.

Thanks,

Any input is much appreciated... thanks ;D ;D

is your cv boots busted? indicating it may be cv joints?

my passenger cv joint clunks around turns, and only clunks while driving at certain angles of the wheel being turned.. its weird

If it clucks real bad letting the clutch out in reverse then I'd say the rear engine mount failed and the clunk is the tranny coming up and hitting the body :o.
Grab the drivers side end of the tranny and pick up hard, if it comes up that's for sure the problem. :)

My Dad's golf did it for years until we finally found it.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Yeah, another guy at work here said it might be the rear mount.  I replaced the front mount not to long ago.  The thing is, i don't think it is CV joint cause i would feel it in turns, and i don't hear or feel anything in turns.  I will take a look at the mount tonight and report my findings. thanks

The mount is solid.  Must be the cv shaft or the clutch maybe?  can't feel it in the steering wheel.  I was thinking it may be a driveline bearing? any thoughts

It sounds like it's happening when you change the loading on the wheels.  Check to make sure all bolts are torqued properly.  Guess how I know?

Yeah, i will have a look tomorrow.  It does happen when the load on the wheels changes.  When you step on the gas it doesn't do it, but slow down, or let your foot off the gas, or even push the clutch in, and it does it.  Will follow up tomorrow... thanks

my car had the same problem last year, really bad clunk when clutching or decelerating, mine ended up being the lower control arm bushing on the drivers side, you may want to give yours a check, justjack the car up and use a pry bar to move th control arm back and forth, and if it looks like its got alot of play, its probably shot

Yeah fixed it! it was the drivers side inner cv joint, i just replaced the whole axle.  The cage that hold the balls in place on the joint was cracked through and there where definite signs of metal in there, so we replaced it, and also found that the passsenger side lug bolt was loose which also contributed to the clunking we heard.  All is fixed, and it really wasn't that bad to change either.  thanks for the help guys
