coolant tank replacement?
« on: December 22, 2009, 09:27:09 pm »
My coolant tank is cracked in a couple of places. I tried using epoxy to seal it but it's back to leaking again. I"ve already ordered the tank and a door handle, both from germanautoparts.com but I"m just wondering if theres anything that will replace the coolant tank. Doesn't look complicated or is it?

Chances are a new tank will last you for many many more years, but basically all one would need is some sort of tank with a hose at the bottom, and a smaller hose to the top..  You'd need some variety of radiator cap with a pressure release and vacuum check valve to let air back in after cooling..

Some have used a plain ole gasser radiator with the cap on the radiator tank, and an overflow tank...  This will work okay, but personally I like the expansion tank setup..   Much easier to get the air out and coolant in...

How many km's are on it?  Have you had any head gasket problems?  Make sure you don't have any head gasket problems.  If there is excess pressure it will tend to blow apart...

Three's 206XXX on the odometer and it isn't working. I've heard all about the air in the coolant but once the coolant circulates for awhile there's a steady stream of coolant, no air. It runs great.

I can't believe how fast germanautoparts.com works. I ordered the drivers side door handle and coolant tank a couple days before Christmas. They both came in today, Saturday. I installed both and the tank and handle are both working fine. I got tired of opening the drivers door from the passenger side door.

Nice!!!   I'm guessing an outside door handle??   Just as an FYI, in a pinch if you remove the handle completely you can at least reach in there with your finger and get the door open..

Or if you are like me you do this for 6 months till you remember to order a new handle..  ::)

I've been running with the new tank and it's nice not having to keep checking on the coolant level. Yep, the outside door handle on the drivers side. When I got the Jetta, the passenger side handle was broke but that wasn't a problem. After getting the refund from the guy on EBAY for the defective passenger side handle, a whole nuther story, everything was fine till the drivers side broke. I got tired of opening the passengers side when I locked the Jetta at work or when I was shopping so I broke down and bought another one. Nice having both doors open like they're supposed to.
