I don't know anything about bilstein except that they're good, or so I've heard.

There's no picture and I don't know if they've got different styles of shocks like for racing or cruising or what

I just did some ebay searches and it looks like there's touring, heavy duty and sport, maybe more but I couldn't find it. Touring's out (boring ), is HD or sport better for taking frost heaves?

BTW I've got MK2 springs on the front (I cut 1.5 coils off to get the right height), and variable rate heavy duty springs on the rear.

I put new boge struts on in late July and they're already getting weak/bouncy so I'm not gonna cheap out this time.

Does bilstein have internal threaded struts or would I need the whole assembly? Thanks

Lowering by cutting coils and leaving the stock shock length will tend to wear out shocks more quickly, but that seems a little fast.

I only cut the coils off so it would sit at stock mk1 height with mk2 springs, I guess the springs are quite a bit stiffer then rabbit ones since they start out beefier plus wacking coils off changes the rate.

I'll make a small Bilstein explanation here:

OEM:
B2 Original Oil
B4 Original Gas

These are direct OEM replacements, set according to manofacturer's specifications (compression/rebound and height like oem ones).

Sports suspension

B6 Sport
B8 Sprint

These are sportier suspensions. They make the car handle quite well, and come in two flavours: B6 (standard height), and B8 (thought to be used with lowering springs).

B10 Power Kit

This kit includes shocks similar to B6, but slightly softer, and springs to go with.

B12 Tuning kit

This kit includes B8 (lowering) shocks, and a set of nice progressive springs, generally made by Eibach or H&R.

Bilstein Professional Suspension Systems

These ones are Bilstein's best.

B14 PSS (A.K.A. PSS)

Coilovers, height is adjustable up to -70 mm (or - 2.75 inches). Inverted monotube technology. They dissipate quite a good ammount of heat when driving fast.

B16 PSS-9 (A.K.A PSS-9)

Same as the above, plus the posibility of adjusting the softness of the shocks. The best stuff.

My 2 cents:

I've driven several mk2 golfs with different engines and suspension systems. I'll tell you about my sensations:

- B6: Tested in a mk2 Gti, with stock springs, it drives quite well, they're comfortable for everyday use, and when you go insane on mountain roads, they behave quite nicely and allow you to go quite fast.

- B8: Tested in a mk2 Gti16 with Eibach springs, made the car low and stiff,  ideal for sporty driving on any condition, even on highways. Winding roads become funnier.

- B12: The surprise. Despite being theorically the same as the above, it behaves even better. On a bone stock mk2 with 14" rims, you can go faster than the B8 equipped car equipped with 15". For me, the best price-quality item of all. A must.

- PSS-9: It's almost a race suspension. It takes some time of testing to set them propperly (you know, adjust height, test a bit, come back, adjust again, drive again, set stiffness, drive a bit again..), but once they're done, it's pure glory. They were mounted on a mk2 TDI and makes driving fast so easy... I could drive through a winding road speaking with the owner calmly, while another guy on a S2 was struggling to follow.

Oh, refering to the OP: I believe those are B4's... ask the seller.

Its a good deal even if B4s. I have been seeing a lot of China parts from worldpac in Bilstein boxes of late though.

The price is enough to scare a guy away :'(, I haven't found any sites in the USA that call them b2, b4 etc. They're all in europe and stuff.

It seems like the option here is HD, sport or touring. From what I've read HD is best with stock springs, I'm running the cut mk2 springs so I'd need new rabbit ones if I went with HD.

Sport is best with lowering springs but I don't want to ruin the off-road capability so that's out.

The tourings simply wouldn't fit the bill because I don't want it to ride like stock, same height yes but it needs to be much firmer.

i bought some bilstein sports for my 318ti from that seller a couple of years ago.  no issues whatsoever and the shocks were the real deal per the auction description.

You may not need new springs. With the HD's, you can run the stock spring. I'm running springs from an 85. They lift the car about two inches in the front, which is a big help in the winter and for off roading.
I may have misread your post, but if you're worried about the travel, don't. the HD's have the same travel as stock inserts.
Ride quality is another thing. If you're looking for a plush ride, buy the OEM Bilsteins. The HD's ride a bit rougher than the OEM's, although they make my car handle way better than before. It was a good trade.

I'm running mk2 springs with 1.5 coils cut off, so it does ride at the stock bunny height just much stiffer.

I do want it to ride firmer than stock but I'm afraid I changed the spring rate a bit too much by cutting 'em so I don't know how it'll work with the HD's since they're designed for stock/softy bunny springs.
