Hello all.
Just drove my Caddy. During the installation of the 1.6 TD I swapped over to a 5 speed. What do I need from the doner Jetta MKI to get the gears in the right gates?? All the linkage was the same except the relay lever on the four speed was smaller, and the suurounding cage. Do I just need the shifter or is there more? Not a lot in FAQ on this.

If it was a four speed you will need the shifter plate# 171 711 261 C 51.00 from a vw dealer to start with
you will also need a 5 speed trans mount as the mk1 is different
I did the same and purchased a 5 speed rebuild kit from ebayor rabbitparts.com and a I got the 5 speed short shifter arm from techtonicstuning with the down pipe , I do have a extra one if you need it and a new leather 5 speed shift knob also

Maybe this will help

It's been years since I did my 4 to 5 speed swap.
I think that the selector lever and rear selector rod and front selector rad are the only pieces that you have to change. I know that I didn't change the shifter plate although I have heard that it is necessary in order to get enough travel between R and 5
The selector shaft is different but that more then likely comes on the transmission already.
I like BEE GEEs idea of purchasing the 5 speed rebuild kit.

Ok. I'll be swapping the selector lever, and relay lever today, and see what I got. When you say shifter plate do you mean the actual base with the plastic ball?? Also Im almost done with stripping the MK1 Jetta for what i need, so I will post the remainder in the for sale section if anyone is needing body parts, and such.
Thanks for the input.

the plate on the floorboard is the shifter plate, some people grind them to fit the 5 speed plate

Glad to hear you got it. It took me weeks to get it figured out and shifting decently when I did it.

Made a down pipe already from scrap systems from an exhaust shop. $300.00 + is a bit much. Mine is not as pretty but works.

Im about a quarter inch shy of 2.5, (inside diameter) but I have under 50 bucks in it. A lot of time though. I am really after mileage and the ability to at least maintain the speed limit up most hills on the highway.
