A2 alternator mount on a A1?
« on: November 27, 2009, 03:11:19 pm »
Seeing that VW likes to keep things compatible, I'm wondering if anyone is doing as the thread topic states.

Non a/c, non p/s Rabbit with the cast non a/c mount.  With the adjustment arm underneath the alternator, tensioning the v-belt is a pita.  I'm wondering if the A2 mount will make life easier.  Would I just need the mount and adjustment arm or the alternator, too?

I hear bad things happening with serpentines & IDIs.  Wish it weren't so.

It's been awhile since I messed with alternator brackets.
 In my quest to delete the AC compressor on my Golf;
 I tried an A1 alternator bracket.
 It put the alternator too close to the radiator,
 scooted it over toward the driver's side about 1/2".
 That's how I remember it.

Sooo putting an A2 alternator bracket on an A1 would move the alternator to the passenger side.
 You'd need a shorter pully.

 That's better than trying to find a longer pully.
 The stock non-AC alternator pully has about the longest neck I can find.

 A2 alternator bracket has a fatter alternator pivot bolt so an A1 alternator might not fit.

 On the A1s; there is a small upper bracket that supports the upper timing belt cover.
 You might have to make a custom one to bridge to the A2 bracket.

All the A2 diesel alternator brackets are the same AC or not so it's easier to find an A2 diesel bracket than it its to find a non-AC A1 bracket.
