water pump connections
« on: November 27, 2009, 12:41:47 am »
Hi guys,
I'm installing a new water pump (complete assembly-pump and housing) which
I purchased from autohausaz.
After mounting the pump, I was installing the hoses and found that one of the hoses connections was the wrong size.
My old pump had 3 connections:
1) lower rad hose
2) bypass hose to cyl head 1.032" dia
3) hose to metal pipe for heater and expansion tank  .870"  ************
NEW PUMP Graf #PA579  autohausaz #037121010a
1) lower rad hose (is the same)
2) bypass hose to cyl head 1.032" dia (is the same)
3) hose to metal pipe for heater and expansion tank  1.032"  ***********

So the new pump has a larger outlet going to the metal pipe. 1.032" instead of
.870" like my old pump.
Everything else appears to be the same.
My question is--
Can I use a different hose,to make this water pump fit my 82 VW pickup
with 1.6NA ?
I was really hoping to finish the truck this weekend- sending the pump back
to get another one-will delay this project for a week.
Ant Ideas what the new pump is for and what model VW I could order a hose for
to make this work ?
I opted to change the entire pump assembly, because mine was quite nasty=corroded, frozen bolts,ect..
I hoping the pump is for a later model, and I can just use a different hose.
I'm anxious to get this truck going agian.
Thanks in advance, Mike

The A2s have a larger hose coming from them.
You might be able to use a MK2 hose,...
but I can't remember if the metal coolant pipe in the MK2 is bigger also.

Ok I'm pretty sure i ran into this problem a few years back.  The hose you need is the one on this page the last one pictured.

If you have an oil cooler then its different entirely.
Let me know if I got it right.
