AAZ pump head swap – reassembly hints required

Having finally decided to attempt the head swap on my AAZ pump to 10mm I have a few questions.

I have noticed that the cam plate could be replaced in one of two positions and could result in the timing being 180 degrees out i.e. delivering to injector 4 instead of injector 1.
Is it safe to assume that on reassembly that with the cam belt pulley locked in its timing position that the cam plate must fit such that the delivery port is adjacent to the port for injector 1 i.e top left when looking at the pump?

Any tips for reassembly, keeping that shim in place between plunger and camplate? May also be tricky to keep the various umpteen springs in place also.

Any handy tips or advice generally on the pump whilst it is stripped?

I’ve read through the theory of operation of the VE pump from various authors lots and lots of times and there have always been grey areas, and after stripping the pump last night, the grey areas remained somewhat cloudy, however, I’ve re-read through some theory of the VE type material this morning and the added insight from the disassembly process has made it all crystal clear. Highly recommended learning if you’ve a spare pump to possibly sacrifice

Plunger slot up, keyway up, per this explosion:



Lots of folks use Vaseline to glom parts together during reassembly... it washes off harmlessly in the first few minutes of operation.

It's the late AAZ pump with the adjustable pulley, I'm not 100% sure about the position of the keyway on the main shaft. Pulley is still fitted.

Lock the pulley in plac as if you were timing the engine and the keyway will be pointing to where outlet A would be if the head was installed

Stand the pump up vertical with head at the top.
Use vaseline to stick the 2 spring guides into the head along with their washers
Set camplate in, plunger and plunger shim in the pump along with the plate the springs rest on and also the springs
Stick the small springs into the head
Gently lower head (with small springs and spring guides stuck to it) onto the plunger

Thats the way i do it.

Yes outlet A is stamped in the head. It's the top one closest to the engine
