Hey guys,
I've been searching on here for a couple of hours trying to see if anyone had the same problem as me but I can't find it, so here we go. 81 Rabbit 1.6 N/A
My IP started peeing fuel so I picked up another pump from my local VW shop that had been on a shelf for a while but it had been sealed up. I throw it in and after setting the timing and priming the pump with a vaccum pump on the out banjo fitting, I can get it to fire after some heavy cranking but it just starts and tries to rev and dies. It doesn't run for more than 1 second. A large puff of white smoke from the tailend each time. I tried several times with the same result.
I decided that this pump was bad and I swapped it out for another. Same thing. Same issue.
Is there something I'm missing here or are both of these pumps bad?
BTW I filled the fuel filter with atf to hopefully reverse any effects of the pump sitting for so long. And I hope to send off the original pump to Giles soon, I just need to get by for now. Any advice is as always greatly appreciated!!!!!
Sounds like a timing issue... perhaps walk us thru the steps you used and we might notice something you can try?
The Cam is at top dead center with the locking plate, the crank is at tdc throught the viewing port on the tranny, and the IP is lined up with the timing marks and locked out as well. I inserted the dial indicator and rolled the engine backwards after removing the locks untill the dial stops, zero out the gauge and then roll up to tdc. My gauge is in inches so I set the pump to .037 in. which if I calculated correctly should be .95mm
I will double check today to make sure everything still lines up but if the timing was off in the motor I would think the compression would be down enough so it wouldn't fire at all. Just a thought.
Anybody else have any input? Vince?
I've tried two different pumps on this thing plus I resealed my old pump but I still get the same result. I crank and crank then when it fires it runs for a second and dies. Repeatedly. I have primed the pump, I have taken the fuel line of the filter and put it in a new bottle of atf with the same result. This is getting really aggravating!!!! I need this thing to run again and soon!
Any body have a clue?
This might be a long shot but it kinda sounds like the injection is 180 degrees off
At me there is 180 rotate inside pump try rotate poley for 180 to test
Just a thought, the "IN" & "OUT" bolts on the fuel line banjos haven't got mixed up? Been there, done that.
Saw you mentioning you've got a filter full of ATF... Have you tried getting it to start on clean diesel? Not sure how cold it is where you are but it might be a bit chilly for ATF to really burn properly until things are warmed up.
