AAZ in a mkI: Oil pan clearance?
« on: November 20, 2009, 12:36:27 pm »
Hi,

I guess as it's my first post I should write a quick introduction.  I've been a long time lurker/user of the search function here and haven't found a reason to post until today due to the unbelievable archived wealth of knowledge.  I'm your typical VW addict and have been building a mkI coupe off and on since 2004.  I'm not a stranger to getting my hands dirty and am not a message board n00b by any measure so please don't flame me too bad ;) ::)  If there's a more suiting forum for this type of question let me know for the future.

I have wanted to swap out the 1.6NA for something with more guts since I bought the car and recently had an AAZ fall in my lap.  I've done a lot of reading on here and it sounds like a pretty straight forward swap.  One piece of info I am missing however is where does the pan sit in relation to the LCA mounts?  Right now the pan on my 1.6 tucks up neatly just above the LCA mounts.  Can anybody with this swap have a peak or even post a picture of where the pan sits?  Is it too much lower?

Thanks,
-Rick

What's the LCA ??? ::)
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

What style of pump is it? 1 or 2 piece pulley? It doesn't make a big difference but the 1 piece pulley pump/engine is a bit easier to install.

No difference between 1,6 and 1,9.

Is that a fact... can anybody confirm?  That's great news!

I haven't seen the motor yet... my friend's DD got rear ended and they wrote it off so I called dibs on its heart.  What about the 2-pce one complicates the swap?  I can go see the car... what's the easiest way to identify the motors from each other?  Is it a production date split?

I can confirm that the 1.9 engine physically fits in the bay with no mods.

The easiest way to tell is to remove the top timing belt cover and look at the pump pulley face. If it has 1 nut in the center it is single piece. If it has the large nut and 3 bolts around it's perimeter it has the 2 piece pulley.

The problem lies with the fact that the 2 piece pulleys have a 68mm mounting diameter where the 1 piece have the 50mm mounting diameter. As you should know, the mk1 passenger side motor mount is built into the pump mount. MK1s only came with the 50mm mounting (1 piece pulley) so it is trickier to make the 2 piece pulley pump work. It's been done many times before though

I hope your friend is alright

Thanks Tyler, I appreciate the info!  He's dropping it off this weekend so I'll soon see I suppose!

He's totally fine, it was a minor accident and it was shocking that they ended up writing it off.  They assessed it 'unfit for the road' due to structural compromise and of course fixing that would need major $$.  It'll live on in parts.
