Post re-seal question
« on: November 16, 2009, 08:13:01 pm »
So apparently I can re-seal a pump, it runs and don't leak, neither of which it would do before. :)

This is a new to me Rabbit and I haven't heard it run before, but it seems to idle high.
I don't have a tach but I know it's high.  I did pull the throttle shaft when I did the top seal but I
DID observe the line on the top of the shaft and did make myself some marks to line things up.
I think it'd be obvious if it was off with the spacing of the splines on the shaft.
This is a plain 107A pump off another car the previous owner pickup up, and on an 82 rabbit.
The smoke screw still has the collar on it also.
And it seems to run well, all in all.  I haven't adjusted the valves yet or run a can of
diesel purge through it.  But it's decent sounding.  I set the pump timing at .95,
it's marbly at idle but the injectors are likely cruddy.
Should I just turn the idle down?  I've never adjusted one with the idle set screw
before.  Could I have the throttle shaft off?

Did you adjust the max fuel screw at all? If you did and got it screwed in farther than it was it'll cause a high idle.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

The collar is still on it and tight.  I might have put it back slightly snugger than it was, but very slightly.

So, very slightly indeed.  Despite the lock coller still being intact, I did have the smoke screw a bit in
further than it was I guess.  I Turned it CCW an eigth of a turn maybe and the idle came down.
Also noticed rev's drop quicker, I had noticed it was a little slow to return to idle
before adjusting the smoke screw, pretty normal now.

So, when you guys fiddle with the smoke screw, do you just idle it down with the idle
screw?  How do you address the slow to return to idle bit, or are they not related?

Yeah every time the max fuel screw is touched the idle must be adjusted with the idle screw.

I've found that if you have the idle set too high it will return to idle slower.

At the stock setting that collar isn't tight against the nut, an eighth turn of the fuel screw will change things quite a bit.

These pumps are pretty fun to play with but if your not careful you can mess stuff up pretty bad ;D, when I first got my rabbit I did some really stupid stuff like take the plunger/head mostly off with it on the car, after I read/learned about it more I was VERY glad nothing fell out of place inside there. :o
