What tranny should I use with the AAZ in a MK1 Rabbit?
« on: November 18, 2009, 01:34:03 pm »
Hello there,

This is my very first post on here!  I am NEW to the diesel scene and have a question for you all.

I am wanting/planning on putting an AAZ in my 1981 Rabbit Diesel.  What 5 speed transmissions can be used with the AAZ?  I have heard that the O2O can be used.  I currently have a 4K, can that be used?

Sorry if this may be a stupid question, but I really don't know squat about diesels...at this time.

i think most 020s will bolt right up with the right parts.  don't use a 4 speed.  I have a 1.9 with an ACN code 020 and it is great!  Low rpm on the interstate.  Someone else should be able to tell you more in detail what you need.

http://www.scirocco.org/gears/

This site has all the 020 (most all of them) gear ratio's find out what size tires your using and punch in the numbers and see what trans gets you what speeds on the highways lol.

FN, FF, FH, FJ (most from '81)    FD 3.89 1st 3.45 2nd 1.94 3rd 1.29 4th 0.91 5th 0.71 Very desirable for a torque monster like a 1.9

YOU WILL NEED A 5 SPEED GEARBOX MOUNT IF YOU DONT HAVE ONE ?

My 81 caddy had a 4 speed, total mileage since new 35k

Mine is a CHD  Trans , ( std on AAZ )3.66 with a .074 final

I had it overhauled with a pelloquin limited slip, added 100 mm drive flanges at overhaul and 16v axles ( new )

There is a ATH 5 Speed ( 4t ) on ebay , buy it now 299.00 with 100 mm drive axles, 3.67 with a .075

it will bolt right up to the AAZ, get a new clutch assy before install

let me know what you are doing and I can give you some help !

ACN 5 speeds are alot easier to find and are layed out well for a diesel. out of econo box jettas.. i swapped my AUG out for one and it rocks... cruisin RPM dropped almost a full 800 rpms.

Is there any concern with using a 1.6NA transmission with a mildly tuned AAZ in terms of strength?  Would one be better off using the tranny from the AAZ?

no, not really. an 020 is an 020. the gears inside are different tho.

It's always a good idea to replace the ring gear rivets with bolts if you have the resources. That's the weakest part of the 020.
