Clocking K14 turbo

May seem a strange question... Got a K14 turbo off a 99 volvo tdi, sold as good (apparently replaced due to mis-diagnosis of problem), but both housings needed to be clocked to get it to fit. There is no play in the shaft.
All I did was loosen the bolts enough to twist both housings into the right place. Also I took the compressor housing off to look at the wheel and replaced it.
The car smokes blue now, small amount at idle, loads when revved up.

Was that the correct way of clocking? Or when removing housings etc should the oil seals be replaced?

sounds like your seals are bad. maybe it was mis diagnosed as one thing, but it still had another thing wrong with it?
