High mileage Audi 2.5Tdi v6
« on: October 09, 2005, 02:11:17 pm »
I'm considering upgrading my 1994 Audi 80 1.9 Td, for a 1998 Audi A4 2.5 TDi v6 estate after an accident, however the new car has 171,000 miles on it.  It has an absolutely flawless service history, with everything being changed on time, and parts replaced ahead of time (e.g. water pump - at the same time as cambelt for easy of assembly).  Also the last 90,000 are all motorway miles (I know the owner).  It looks and drives good.

How long do people think this engine will live, what is the most likely problem with such a high mileage car?  The turbo and clutch/gearbox are original.

cheers

With lots of highwaymiles and good servicing the engine can run at least twice the miles.. but it still is a piece of man made metal and wires so what will brake down in between is hard to predict.

I agree.  Very hard to predict!  The previous owner has done everything right.

The highest mileage I have seen on the v6 2.5Tdi is 220,000 in an A6 estate, but there was a gearbox problem on that one.  Of course there are problems - like cambelt failures on low mileage cars too.

The older 2.5 Tdi 6 cylinder has a great reputation for mega-miles but is only available in really ugly body styles !

I've got a 1.9TDI with currently 296.000km/186.000miles and still running great, the mpg is still close to 1L/20km and I never replaced anything on the car in the last 100.000km since I bought it besides shocks and the normal service.

186k is good mileage!!  There is something dignified about the high milers!

yep - the 1.9s are great.  My 1.9td has done 150k now, although the turbo has been replaced.  It shows no signs of giving up.

I'm concerned about that the v6 will not be as long-lived as the 1.9, and it's a more complex engine, which is more expensive to keep running I guess.  I don't really want to chip the 1.9 - as the increased costs are the same as just buying the 2.5 for me.
