1.6 to 1.9td swap (driveshafts wont fit)?
« on: November 05, 2009, 08:13:51 am »
ok so im pretty far into the swap now. Its being swapped into a 91 golf and all the wiring is coming with it. I ran into a problem today when the driveshafts are obviously to small for the new tranny. Any ideas for what i could do? I have both trannys just not both driveshafts.

Thanks

Your 91 driveshafts are likely for 90 mm transmission flanges and the 1.9 tranny flanges are 100 mm.  You can either use your old tranny (it will work fine with a 1.9) or you can just swap the flanges from the old tranny to the new one.  Here's how:  http://www.brokevw.com/020flange.html.  See the info on converting flange sizes near the bottom of the page.  You should be ok since your 90 mm flanges are from a tranny newer than '83.

Will that actually work? Because i asked a guy at mister transmission and he said that its to small. and the spindles wont be the same.

that guy was blowing smoke up your ass.. if you have a newer (83+) then it has the bigger oil seals and centering cones and things. people think they are limited slip, they arent. just pull the flanges off your old tranny and put them on your new tranny, or just use your old tranny, or just swap the inner CV joints on the axles you have in there. put 100mm flanges on your 90mm axles. thats what i did, its super easy doing the inner joint swap.
