Speedo on my 92 Jetta Eco just died. No needle sweep, no odometer - nada. Before I start prospecting for the culprit, anyone have any hints to offer - common weak spots, etc?
Otherwise, I guess I'll start by pulling the cable from the tranny & work my way back. Can you test the cable & speedo by putting the cable end in a drill??
Thanks in advance!
Check to see that the speedo gear is still on the cable end. Then check to see if it is still attached to the back of the cluster.
IIRC you can spin the speedo cable by hand and the needle should jump.
Thanks guys. I'll prob. have time this Saturday to dig into it. I think I'll start by pulling the cable out of the tranny, check for the gear, and see if there's any action at the speedo when spun. If that all fails then I'll dive into the dash cluster. If the gear's missing in the bottom of the tranny, I wonder how I'll know which one to get - I looked and it seems they list a "natural" colored gear and a red one too. The tranny's an 020 AVX...
Turns out:
1. cable has a GREEN gear on it - not "natural" or red. Go figure. Haven't seen green mentioned anywhere.
2. cable had come unclipped from rear of cluster. Tranny end was fine.
3. if you use a drill on the tranny end of the cable, it needs to spin in reverse to move the needle.
Thanks for the info! Glad to hear you got it fixed!
