door stuck locked

well, I now have a passenger door that wont unlock on my MK2 GTI.
which means that I cannot open it.
I have tried actuating the latch with my fingers from inside the door, but no luck.
the lock mechanism seems to work(clicks up and down) but the door still wont open.
I am thinking that the latch has decided to pack it in, and don't mind replacing it, but I need to get the damn thing open to do that.
anyone have any ideas about how to get the door to open?
thanks,

Can you remove the door card and get at it that way?

door card is out(don't have them anymore) and still no go.
I pulled the little levers on the latch that the handle pushes and nothing.
the weird thing is that the lock seems to work, goes click up and click down, but it never actually unlocks.

I had a Passat that did the same. I drilled into the latch from the back seat and jimmied it with a screwdriver till I got it open.

I've never heard of this happening on a front door before, but what you can do is yank the door seal out where the latch is, and then you need to press down on the holding piece. If you look at how the latch on the drivers side works you should be able to figure out what I'm trying to say. If not I'll take some pictures.
I actually had to do this today on my Jetta

ah, that makes sense.
just override the whole latch by releasing the catch, I will try that.
thanks for all the help.

funny, I posted the same thing at three forums(this one, the vortex, and a local euro club) and you guys are the only ones who responded.
both of those forums have lots of recent posts about what wheels to put on, or why a vw looks like crap if it is at a drivable height, but no help for someone with an actual problem.
thanks a bunch for actually caring about your fellow VW owners.
