What makes it work smoother after it starts and stay that way then, is it something that gets freed up inside somewhere

The amount of pressure in the pump directly effects how much advance you have. The advance piston is now being pushed by pump pressure so when you use the cold start you don't have to pull as hard because either the piston has already moved, or the pump pressure is acting like an assist.
can over advanced timing make the cold start not respond?
